Music - Musicians - Interview | by SuccoAcido in Music - Musicians on 12/12/2009 - Comments (0)

Fabio Albanese

Fabio Albanese’s music is a clear crystal that emits pure light. Successful is such rare example of lucid and mature self-produced grassroots art. The south that still makes you smile.

SA: Please introduce yourself to us…
FA: I am a musician, coming from Puglia, devoted to experimentation in music. The love for music, risen since my youth, evolves over time in finding new ways and new types of production, as an expression of my own personality. Proof of this are the different genres you can find in my several publications: Suburban Ways, Di Notti Insonni, Sternocleidomastoideo-le proprietà del pomodoro.

SA: Generally, what instruments do you like to play?
FA: I believe myself, without any presumption, a multi-instrumentalist, and even here my own productions can stand for witness. When I compose and play a song, I work without the help of other people, and this may be a stronger commitment, but, at the same time, it is an extra motivating force to improve my musical skills. I started out as guitarist but I've learnt to appreciate other instruments, more or less orthodox. I try to get sound from anything that might make one: I love the sounds of reality and the quiet of nature.
SA: How do you started being involved with music? Who had an influence on you first?
FA: I do not remember the very moment, I only know that I began to appreciate music – real music, I mean – while listening to my father’s records. I used to listen to what came to my hands without prejudice, with the naturalness that only a child has. Then experience makes you choose what you like and what you don’t. I believe that the influences of that period were very ordinary ones, which over time have been improved and modified through a different approach to music and life. Today I can think of other names, but I believe that everyone has contributed in a equally remarkable way.

SA: Would you tell us about your university studies?
FA: After graduating from High School, despite my bent for the humanities, I chose not to continue with university studies in order to better focus on music, but not just this. After graduation, in fact, I lived in London for work for a while, and, back in Italy, I lived in different regions thus absorbing landscapes, culture and tradition that undoubtedly influenced a lot my musical development.

SA: Where do you put yourself within artistic scene today?
FA: Certainly out of commerciality. Unfortunately or fortunately this tendency to experiment, to look for a route that has not been walked yet, brings my music to circulate in the underground environment mostly.

SA: Let’s speak about your research…
FA: My research is not made up, it’s a combination of music and life instead. In fact, over time my research has taken different paths according to what I needed, to my mood and mental conditions that I used to cling. As for an author his writings are an expression of himself and of his personality, the same is for me with my music and my trials in general. The constant is, in any case, the search for an intimate space made up of elements of nature in a time when everything seems to be solely and exclusively made by cement. Even people.

SA: What about improvement in your research?
FA: From a musical point of view I would not talk of progress or improvement, I can fairly say that there was definitely a personal growth that has enabled me to shift my gaze away from me and even from my music in the traditional sense.

SA: You and the audience... Some words about it, please.

FA: Which audience?? It’s been a while that my tendency to extreme testing has not conceded me the possibility of live performances. As I said earlier, I sometimes use obsolete instruments that would be awkward to carry on stage.

SA: What about your next projects?
FA: My next project is recording an album, a sort of tribute to the great figures of the past that time has made almost non-existent or still unknown to most. In this occasion I’m thinking to include texts as, which is unusual in my music, but necessary according to me. But now it is still early to speak about it, tracks are being recorded.

SA: You on tour... Ever had one?
FA: I played for several years traveling across Italy, especially in Puglia, until my music allowed me to – then I stopped for the reasons already mentioned. In short, until I felt the need to bring on stage an alarm clock, a crying baby, some birds to reproduce their singing.

SA: Is there any music label you would like to mention here to allow people discover it?

FA: Absolutely not. I firmly believe in home recording. Maybe this implies bigger expense for a musician .. but you don’t have to give up your freedom, at least.

SA: Could you suggest us any album or musician to better approach you?
FA: Surely the whole production of Nick Drake, Tim Buckley’s Happy Sad, Blue Afternoon, Lorca, Starsailor, Elliott Smith – who I feel very close to. Some slow-core bands and post-rock ones like Mogwai, Codeine, Slint, Explosions in the sky, Godspeed you! Black Emperor, all the Italian and not Italian progressive , the real one I mean, that of the 70's, psychedelic music in general, dark and new wave, with the Italian Piero Ciampi, Claudio Lolli, Enzo Maolucci, but I could go on forever.

SA: I would like to ask you about your hometown and your relation with it, with the place you live in. What about the music environment? Any friends you’d like to mention here?
FA: The city I live in, Barletta, is going through a very important change in its development, which unfortunately does not impact at all on the music environment. There are several interesting initiatives, festivals, concerts, but if you're out of commerciality you're also out of the circle.

SA: What do you think about the current music scene in general?
FA: Well asking a musician who’s out of any media event what he thinks about the current music scene is a bit like a rhetorical question, meaning that as I strongly aim to some music which is different from the circulating one, I do not say that I tend to snobbery, but I consider all this new music undifferentiated .. yes, there are still some performing groups worthy of attention, sources of good music ... but the rest ...

SA: What do you think about the social environment in general?
FA: That is worse than the music one. Now I may sound rhetoric, but we're seeing the annihilation of anything that resembles values. It seems to me that new generations just love to appear and there is a strong circulation of drugs, at least in my area. Although there are some small but committed elements that make me hope for well.

SA: Do you work with music for a living or you have got another job?
FA: If I worked with my music for a living I would be famous! Jokes aside, for the moment I'm trying to make my music, work and other commitments to reconcile. But I hope one day to make music my job.

SA: Would you like to say anything in particular or speak of someone you love to SuccoAcido readers?
FA: I'd like to talk about love for music or for life, of commitment to make things change, of how important is being aware of where you live and who’s governing your country, of what’s being done and what could be done. But these would only be words. Certainly experience always teaches more than words.

SA: Would you like to teach us how to cook some of your favorite dishes?
FA: I have many favorite dishes .. but I prefer to create and experiment one for this occasion: the dish of happiness. The ingredients are: ¼ Bianciardi, 70% of Nature, a large rainbow, enough rain, a fixed temperature of 25 °C, lots of music. Mix properly in the oven at 200 ° for 10 minutes and serve warm.

SA: Would you like to ask to yourself any question I forgot to ask to you? Any needing, I am here to let them read it.
FA: One question may be - which meaning does the word musician involve for you? The answer would sound like this: in my case, besides being a status, a condition which I every day relate to, being a musician is not limited to composing-recording-spreading. Among my music interests I also include composition of soundtracks for short films, the latest one was Met a neon last night, written by Claudia Gorgoglione and directed by excellent Paola Luciani. I’m also involved with covering music in several theatre performances, and, last but not least, I’m covering the setting of some exhibitions and presentations - please refer to my myspace address for more details.

SA: Can you speak about the way your first album Sternocleidomastoideo - Le proprietà del pomodoro came up? And, if you like, add a comment or a word or an image for each song... I love them all.
FA: Sternocleidomastoideo le proprietà del pomodoro was born a bit like my previous albums, for excessive sound absorption. Every time I record an album I need a long break that allows the absorption of new sounds until when, saturated, I feel the need to translate them into notes by filtering them through my thoughts. This record in particular, although it is my third product, I consider it a bit like my first real work, not for the maturity of the music but for the channels and paths that it has walked through, and this is always unexpected when it comes to instrumental music. I dare say, in fact, that my music is characterized by the absence, the one of spoken words, and by the constance of my composition method: nights spent hunched over a guitar, the smells of the city in the background and cigarettes – both extinguished or not.
Day after day they have shaped what today is "only" tracks and told the story that the listening ear decides to get from this music grammelot. Unheard voices become in Buzz the introduction that foreshadows the intimate dimension where prying thoughts both find and offer shelter, in a world, for example, where lights clear the way as it happens in Met a neon last night, in which it seems that neon lights are alive as human beings talking to each other using a language of intermittency and power surges. This is a song that I feel very close to because it happened, as with other songs, that music has served (and the target was that) for the eloquent images of the homonymous short film directed by Paola Luciani for the story written by Claudia Gorgoglione, and it is part of the film Where is the Rainbow? also, directed by Matteo Duranti and Cristiano Carotti.
In other tracks, however, the images can be derived directly from the title or from the sounds I used – not only from the films they’re part of; I think of Trees, an homage to nature in post-rock interpretation, which I presented at the Weimar festival with a video - Dark Regions - produced by Emanuele Napolitano and Francesco Petricca. Innocence came as a result of the contrast between the musical side (namely between indie sounds and real sounds) and the merely didactic one that was supported by the video, and was used for the Route 77 review at Teatro Kursaal Santa Lucia in Bari.
...e fuori piove, included in previous Di Notti Insonni album, then reread for the occasion in a folktronic key, which gave me a good deal of satisfaction for the large number of transmission in radios and for its video which I wanted and directed to show all of my inner world. Le cliquer arrongant de Monsieur Morbier uses an excellent and meaningful explanation, which is the result of the previously mentioned Mr. Emanuele Napolitano’s images showing time in all its tyranny, greedy of instant and moments. Petali, with its delicate sounds, is a post-dadaist anthem - to quote Stefano Solventi - that accompanies the performance of the great Alberto Grifi, Verifica Incerta, during the review hosted by Kursaal theatre.
Your origami, probably the only "positive note" of the entire album as it tells about life in all its optimism, only disturbed at some point, a descending note: the inevitable and undesirable bitterness that swoops into existence.
Also Arbres des nuages sur moi has been elected, to my delight, to the scoring of images - of Farida, to be precise, a short film directed by Natascia Abbattista. It describes the passage of clouds that makes the weather either rainy or sunny, the moment before or the one later, the best or the worst.
Only three tracks are left "orphan" of images. La danza degli ombrelli I think it is just an expression of my personality: lover of the rain, a little less of umbrellas, and of melancholy that rain expresses, which is for me to include in the sphere of positive feelings.
Snow is the son of a snowy day in a place where snow is mostly absent, was born between the strings of my guitar (which is, remember, my main instrument) and turned (not automatically) into a digital version. It has got surprise, joy, cold, warmth and .. snow inside.
From snow to Winter in Berlin, which is divided into two parts. One draws heat, fireplaces, Victorian houses, the joy to huddle under the covers; the second part is as icy as Jack Frost, with no possibility of salvation in a place, Berlin, which unites and divides avant-garde and retro style, ancient and modern, like its old wall used to do. To act as a curtain between songs there are three Breaks scattered throughout the album that are an explicit reference to elements of nature, and give the illusion of a breath in a place where the only possible reality is concrete and just the dream of a small green airy place is left.

Fabio Albanese

SA: Dove posizioneresti te stesso all'interno della scena artistica odierna?

SA: I tuoi prossimi progetti...

SA: In tour...mai avuto uno?

Lorca, Starsailor, Elliott Smith che sento molto vicino, alcune bands slow-core e post-rock quali Mogwai, Codeine, Slint, Explosions in the sky, Godspeed You!
