Art - Arts - Interview | by Arianna Carcano in Art - Arts on 18/09/2009 - Comments (0)

Luca Puglia

“Manufacturing, telling, collecting, this is what I am doing since I learned to play with caran d'ache. My idea of representation has a traditional setting: I am interested in signs and enamoured by colours. Pastels watercolours, acrylic, toners, films: these are the main supports that I use as tools for my work”

This is how the young promising new talent describes his own being artist. From time Luca Puglia works on the visual communication concept crossing different artistic disciplines and creating his own language, that has quickly assumed a cinematographic mark proposing conjugation and experimentation of a plurality of techniques such as: videos, technical drawings, graphic drawings and digital images.

Today we have the chance to see him as filmaker of videoart and short films that, in these last two years enabled him to be selected as one of the best Italian filmakers. In 2008 at the Bicycle Film Festival, (international touring show through several world capitals) New York – Portland, with the documentary video History of Bicycles With No Name co-author Simone Cariello. Then in 2009, again in Milan, in occasion of the exhibition Public Turbulence with a video Heimlich – Unhemlich, projected on the wall of a building in the well known Isola quarter nowadays one of the most dynamics place of Milan in the sphere of the contemporary artistical research.
A whole quarter that, over time, despite unforeseens and obstacles, has hardly managed to save its ideals, fighting for the survival of Art as effective means of communication and dissuasion. This is how, once again, Isola Art centre finds its manner to make available the public space for artists and curators. Art hides and upsets the quarter's streets causing a shared disorder and a slight displacement of meanings and social conventions, proposing sound installations, theatrical performances and screenings through the streets.
An attempt to open new hypothesis of access into the reading of the new work of Luca Puglia, trhough a brief cross talk in order to delve into the less harped critics in the reception of his work, realized for the occasion with the collaboration of Simone Cariello.

SA: Which is the artistic sphere that you are mainly interested in?
LP: I use to work especially on videos, that are the most interesting media because usable by the most and of easy access. I am interested in the visibility of my work: everyone gives a different reading, so the work assumes different meanings.

SA: Tell me about your work, how does it rise?
LP: We are always interested in telling a story.
For the production of this video we started from the private concept of private and how this concept can be shared. We faced with a kind of play on words: heim - unheim (domestic- terrible), it looked interesting to evaluate how the combination of these terms (borrowed by the German language), could mix two basic ingredients of nevrosis. From here arises the idea to show the most insane part of what we mean with private.

SA: What are you trying to communicate, which is the main theme of your work?
LP: Since it was a public screening, a huge projection on a wall, our aim was to reveal the wicked mechanisms concealed behind and inside the homely dailiness.
We chose to use the “victim” as means to lead the spectator into the identification: establishing a relation with the victim; relationship that is crushed since its origin.
The hand that carries the eye outside the visual field cuts this relationship-symbiosis. All of this does not happen in a slaughterhouse or in a slum, but inside a house, in a cosy place, chromatically welcoming. The starting background apparently relates to innocuous daily gestures. The involvement of the weeping eye interrupts the ordinary harmony, that we do not even know. The eye is an open window on a microcosm that moves behind his back; a world that does not see but perceives. It is observer as well as observed; it tries to establish a dialogue with its silent movement, but can only give us the consciousness that this waiting will be dramatically resolved.

SA: Could you tell me exactly the steps that brought you to the realisation of the completed work?
LP: We always start from a rather heated debate, we fix some points that are relevant for us and on these points we start in developing the work, but it is during the production that the work acquire its real form.
We consider our works as life pulsing creatures, we operate on open heart.

SA: Have you already other ongoing projects, could you reveal us your next work?
LP: We wrote a history on a baby super hero, we would like to work on it as soon as possible.

SA: Could you satisfy a curiosity, what do you think of curators? The category in general I mean.
LP: We are conscious of the fact that an artist, at a certain point of his career, needs the meeting with a curator, and we well know that there are so many young curators as well as young artists.
It is clear that since this is a personal consideration everything is permitted, what I cannot understand is the figure of the curator-failed artist: too many obscure feelings that make his work less useful.

SA: Your attention is directed to a genre that is called “docu-fiction”, a genre that wants to place itself between the documentary and the cinematic production, could you exactly tell me what is it about?
LP: It orignates from the need of differentiation from the documentary as absolute genre. The documentary has always been associted to a “committed” vision, that sometimes makes it boring and of niche. The fictionaire appearance that we try to reach enables us to lighten the vision through a language closer to the cinematic narration, alternating interviews and visual narrations. The choice of two format allow us to move on this border line: we use to join the warm colours of the super8 film with the digital objectivity. A recent example is the work realized in Milan, in 2007, titled History of bycicles with no name in which it is clear the parallelism of two narration lines, one based on the facts' objectivity and on first person narrations and the other mediated by a fictionalized screenplay.

SA: The city seems to be a key element in your projects, it is like a misterious world full of incentives to catch and histories to delve into. The stories that you tell in your videos at a first sight could look as simple glimpes on quotidian life experiences, but if you take a careful look they have the power of showing what really courious and interesting is cealed behind every corner of our cities. From where does the wonder towards the mundane take its origins, which is the aim you want to reach? LP: We are interested in what is cealed or what is cancelled by the flow of time, therefore the memory of a past whose traces are often visible only in people's memories. In this moment we are working on a project that looks at an important place that has been symbol of social and cultural opportunities, as well as part of the artistic and architectural heritage of Milan. A building realized in the early twenties, recognized as “ House of artists” that rised a cutting edge social system. It is the first maison born in order to host art studios. Although the current neglected status of this place, in people's memory remains the wish of make up the communion and sharing spirit that helped the artist not to be isolated by the context in which he was living, making him active supporter of the city's cultural and social development.

SA: As new young artist, what can you give us of new and original for an audience that has already seen everything and that is bored by everything? LP: I don't believe that the object is to find something new. The novelty comes hand in hand with the society changes. I think the task of the artist is to make this public and to create a common area of dialogue with the people that like us lives the quotidian.

Luca Puglia
