Eventoarea - non profit space for contemporary art in Calabria - Intervew with Loriana Ambusto

"It is still distant the idea that culture is an integral part of the services doomed to the citizen: neither the same citizen has a clear perception of his cultural needs and, consequently, the institutions do not take charge. Maybe it is exactly with regard to this aspect that all the no-profit system should act, bringing out a cultural demand that exists, even if unexpressed."

This reflection by Loriana Ambusto, president of the Eventoarea onlus, could be the best introduction to the interesting dialogue which gave life to this long interview. this is, in fact, a very active reality that works far beyond the rhetoric of southerness but always with the spirit and the audacity of a cultural challenge.

SA: We can start this dialogue with what intrigued me when I read of you. With regard to your onlus structure you define yourselves as “association of culture and contemporary art social promotion”. Can you tell me what you mean with social utility of culture?
LA: We do not have to think about culture as something “high” or ”other”, distant or separated by the quotidian, but we have to start from its socio-anthropological meaning, that is its being “way of organising the knowledge” (subjective and objective) and, consequently, way of defining the identities. It is clear that the identity problem is one of the basic cruces of our time, to whom is possible to reconnect a set of declensions, from the adolescent pathologies (bullish, compulsive eating, etc.) to the individual ones (depression, anxiety) coming to global thematics pertaining to cohabitation (racism, ethnical or religious conflicts). This exemplification risks to appear excessive but it is necessary to clarify the urge of an education system that teaches to “feel” the need to create more occasions of communication that encourage people not to take everything for granted but to bring themselves into question, get them used to ask questions and, therefore, get a sense of their way of being alive. This wondering capacity can be translated into a development of autonomous critical sensibility that is the base of every active citizenship. In this sense, contemporary Art can be tool for reflecting on the present, occasion of comparison with ourselves, with the other, with history and society: if each work of art can be meant as open dialogue between artist and user, contemporary art, in particular, presents this characteristic of continual reciprocal feedback. Its “open” connotation, its contents, the performative approach towards what is happening, make the work of contemporary art a privileged means for actions aimed to change the society’s structure.

SA: Your experience as group took form from the previous project St.Art, Cultural Association for students of Arts. How did your career developed?

LA: In 2002/2003 we attended a course of contemporary arts performed by Ludovico Pratesi at the school of Architecture in Reggio Calabria: we received so many motivations and so high was the passion that Ludovico injected on us that, with unconsciousness in good measure, we created a Cultural Association with the purpose of setting up promotional initiatives of contemporary art in Reggio Calabria. Obviously, over the time, the associative experience faced us with the need to acquire newer and more elaborated duties (in terms of knowledge of contemporary art and its “system”) and, mainly, to face with wider problematic. In particular emerged that this social interest, fruit of the training and the personal experiences of some members, leaded to a decision of a cut to the dedication to the cultural field, changing the aims and, therefore, moving our area of action: then we arrived to constitute a new subject, the Association “eventoarea onlus”, inspired by that idea of culture that we previously mentioned.

SA: In your website you clearly express your aims in a list of points that I quote here to avoid you a repetition and facilitate a deepening of some current themes: “promoting contemporary art, supporting artistic creativity, developing a real sense of affiliation to the initiatives, favouring collaboration among public and private institutions, encouraging comparison and exchange processes, getting to emerge the unsaid need of places for the contemporary”. I think I can recognise the basic postulates that I locate in my researches on the no-profit realities that deal with contemporary art promoting a contact with the country. Can you make me a concrete example of how you activate a relationship among different local subjects (institutions and privates, small companies and art galleries) and the artists that you involve?
LA: Working with local institutions is really difficult. It seems a paradox the fact that just those subjects that are institutionally responsible for the cultural promotion are the most mistrustful to approve this kind of projects. Institutions, unfortunately still remain too closed to a vision of culture almost totally focused on shows and leisure time (as clearly prove the names of the same local authority!) and, consequently, to an advertising purpose of its enterprises whose main aim seems to be the tourist promotion of the territory.
It is obvious that who directly acts on the field is more sensitive to a view connected with socio-cultural themes, but we do not have to forget that the being “small” interlocutors presents huge disadvantages for the access to the circuit made by museums, institutions and private galleries. In our case the difference was the guarantee of Ludovico Pratesi both for the relationships with galleries and for the proposals to institutions and private sponsors that supported the initiatives.
Persists a great availability by the artists that, until now, have always greeted enthusiastically our proposals, open to experimentation and dialogue and ready to put themselves at stake. If this is taken for granted by the young people, who certainly suffer from lacking presence of exhibition opportunity, it is not for those artists already recognised at a nation and internation-wide.
It is difficult to make an example that can be indicative of the way in which we operate, since every time it is necessary the elaboration of new and different approaches, it depends on the project. It is certain that the personal confidence that we establish is fundamental, at any level, because often our interlocutors give us their support on the base of our enthusiasm, our motivation, our abilities more than as regards to the projects' contents: it can appear unprofessional but, today, this aspect brings good outputs!

SA: Which is the role of no-profit organisations into the Contemporary Art? What do the associations represent? A source, a basin of knowledge and horizontal relationships, the direct access to the younger artistic production?
LA: I don't know...sometimes I think that the choice of this legal form has been a folly: we even have to explain why we are an organisation of social promotion and not a cultural one! It is still distant the idea that culture is an integral part of the services doomed to the citizen: neither the same citizen has a clear perception of his cultural needs and, consequently, the institutions do not take charge. Maybe it is exactly with regard to this aspect that all the no-profit system should act, bringing out a cultural demand that exists, even if unexpressed. It is clear then that, acting directly on the territory we become also a sort of tail between the young artistic expression and a more structured system like the galleries' and museums' one. In fact we try to offer to young artists a series of opportunities of both exhibitions of their works and comparison with what happens in Italy and in the world, by doing so, we contribute to stimulate their research.

SA: To this end I ask you a really important question of actuality, that concerns to all of us.The censorship. We had many examples of politics intervention related to the artists' freedom of expression, we were present to the closure of important cultural centres as Cox 18 in Milan and many other odd experiences.
What, do you think, is the censorship in contemporary culture? It is something immediately visible or it is hidden by a spread conformism?
LA: Maybe, in Italy, there is a more serious and urgent problem with censorship, this is the fact that most of the people is not able to work out an autonomous think, unconditioned by massmediatich mechanisms. It is clear, for example, that when some news succeed in appear in their integrity free from screens or manipulations, and people remain impassive, even facing with extraordinary cases. This is more incredible than the same censorship: is it possible that we are no more able to be indignant? That we permit to trample our rights without finching? I think the priority which we have to focus on is the opening of a breach into this sense of spread resignation and collective anaesthesia because, even if someone would be in the condition of freely say what he thinks, it would not be useful if, on the other side, there was no one able to listen, comprehend and make his message

SA:More and more I am realising how artistic activity on a complex territory as the South of Italy, I think of projects like Isole, GarBa, Exposito, implies a surplus of experiences regarding the real world and its problems. What kind of activity have you discovered working in your city? Did you reformulate your idea of territory through the meeting with the people who live and shape it?
LA: We started well conscious of the problems involved in acting on a territory so featured and no more changes have been done during these six years. It is always difficult to communicate to those subjects with whom we would have naturally to collaborate, both on a vertical and horizontal level. The established mechanisms are more complex and the strengthened minds are difficult to change. Into a general climate of diffidence, we find that exists at least a part of operators and audience that, on the contrary, shows interest and motivation: a sort of embryonic question that, if wrong nourished and supported, could autonomously express itself, through more conscious and defined choices, consequently empowering the system, we hope, political independent.

SA: Which are your strategies of cultural exchange with other artistic context in Italy and abroad?
LA: Our experience is still too young to enable us to speak of best practices and I have to acknowledge that we worked more “for emergencies” than on the base of a long term schedule. Unfortunately (maybe just because of the sometimes hostile context in which we operate) we are conscious that we still have to reach a professional reliability that enables us to move for proposals with more authority. Certainly we are conscious that only through a solid net of collaborations a growth is possible, both individually on the base of the exchange of reciprocal experiences and duties, and in group, creating a compact system with common and shared aims. A net that moves towards a clear direction and control the episodic acts that disseminate our South.

SA: We are speaking about one of your recent project: a_l_margine, initiative for the contemporary art promotion. Can you describe it? How did develop the relationship with the school of architecture? What sort of connections did you establish among students, teachers, artists and territory?
LA: a_l_margine is the natural prosecution of previous actions developed at the school of architecture, the sphere in which our first associative experience was born. The link with the University is really strong, both in training and affective terms, and we want to intensify it because we believe that the academic pole has to become more and more the privileged place of cultural researches. The actions finalised to the Academy try to maintain a leitmotiv with the architecture, insisting on the idea that to see through the artists' eyes can open new views and suggest methodological approaches different from the same project: do not forget that, professionals, mainly those who directly act on urban and social changes, should have to be always conscious of the deep responsibility that their work implies. With a_l_margine we focus our remark on a “positive” idea of periphery, thinking that starting from an apparently profitless condition of exclusion from the major circuits of culture (and consume) production we can develop a major critical ability, facilitated by the external viewer. In particular we curated a short selection of videos by seven artists working in a nationl and international setting and a collective of young artists that plaied their condition of marginalization. In occasion of the opening we invited Domenico Mangano at a round table open not only to teachers and students but also to the whole citizenship.
The aim of these initiatives is always the opening of a dialogue, encouraging the comparison and the collaboration among the different parts: between famous and young artists, artists and architects, students and teachers, Universities and city, reconnecting as much as possible spheres that too often remain isolated. The short-run aim is to create a sort of department for contemporary art research at the Mediterranean University of Reggio Calabria, that offers a transversal support to the different educations and that promotes interdisciplinary and experimentally didactical activities. Contemporary art could help not only in the deepening of arguments but also in delineating new moethods, less rigid and less academic, closer to flexibility and quickness with whom changes of complex current dynamics have done.

SA: The idea of a research department for Contemporay Arts is really exciting, we know that the research's development on these topics, in the south of Italy is still blocked because of a spread protectionism, conservative practice, mainly directed to the expression of local personalities (painters, sculptors, professors...) and less inclined to the comparison with the reality. Because reality is not the microcosm that the University often support on a local level, but on the contrary, it is what continually happen, outside these contexts and that could be put in active and productive relation with the local resources and traditions. The Cultural studies, in Palermo are a recent conquest, for examples, but it is from the need of an update that we have to start in order to build a dignified existence.
You told about interdisciplinary, do you therefore want to involve different education in this new platform?
LA: The idea is not only to create a collector, a subject that catches what happens around, but also to contaminate, directly insert itself into the context , acting almost as “hecklers”. We would like to create a centre that elaborates interdisciplinary projects. This because we believe that Art has to be considered not only as goal but also as means, as tool of reflection, of enquiry and, therefore, of intervention in every forms of human knowledge and experience, mainly where the mind is turned into relationship. The making this kind of operations, starting from University, has always the aim to “conquer” the fortress of the academy world that is too often isolated from the place in which it is inserted and is only a celebrating stage of the same known (or unknowns?).

SA: Can you tell us what you look at, since ever, in your city in your land.
LA: We are more personal now...! I cannot look at my land making me free from sensibility, this is the reason why I keep on working on it despite the numerous difficulties and scarce results. On the other hand, I developed, during the time, a strong critics that enable me of a sufficient lucidity in the analysis of the problems. What I am looking at are the people: the extraordinary variety and richness of our historical, artistic and environmental heritage often remove the sight from what we would have to focus on. The cultural isolation that the politics of this last century “gave” us, nourished generations that totally deny what happens in the rest of Italy and in the world, with the terrible consequence that people from the south is often discredited, in addition a dangerous diffidence towards everything outside the limited garden. I would like to contribute in order that this situation start changing, that people from South re-conquest their mind and action autonomy, free from fanatism, victimism, going out from this perverse mechanism of assistance, cause of huge dispersion of sources.

SA: Can you tell us about the next artistic project? (exhibition or another construction site)
LA: We are working on two ideas that are two different modalities to reach the same goal: the direct involvement of local communities inside artistical projects. On one side we would like to promote a course for groups of integrated planning (artists, architects, social operators, etc.) working on proposals of urban requalification. This kind of activity could enable us to support and promote the young professionalism, keeping high the attention on the territory and creating a link with local communities in order to guarantee their participation in every steps. On the other side, we would like to work mainly on the national and international network, setting up moments of meeting and collaboration, in this case as well, with young artists and the citizens, following the residencies model, aiming the presence of the artists to the elaboration of project thought for the territory and that can be able to start processes that has their own autonomous continuity.

(mostra o altro in cantiere)
