Fly Pan Am

One among the most exiting rhythmic engines around comes from Canada, its name is Fly Pan Am, and their new record Ceux Qui Inventent N'ont Jamais Vécu is one of the most interesting things we listened to during this year. In the following interview Roger Tellier tell us about the evolution of the band, showing us also an interesting extra-musical profile of his Canada.

SA: Listening to “Ceux Qui Inventent N'ont Jamais Vécu” I’ve noticed a strong “free” component that was absent in your debut album, which was near to the epic feelings of Godspeed You Black Emperor. Who Are The Real Fly Pan Am?

Roger Tellier: There is no “real” FPA. There is the indefinite FPA who lives and breathes through the compositional-decomposition process and eventually “defines” itself as the represented FPA, which exists only on records. I think that a group that tries to develop it’s identity must accept that this identity is infinite, unstable and in a constant flux.

SA: Kraut rock (for example Neu, Can) and certain new wave (for example Talking Heads, Wire) seem to be your main references; Now, I don’t want to say that you’ ve been influenced by these bands, but listening to Xiu Xiu debut album, the last Gogogo Airheart release “Exittheuxa” it seems that some kind of artistic way of doing rock is coming back. What’s your opinion about this?

Roger Tellier: I don’t know if I would call what we do artistic rock, we are certainly not self conscious about integrating “artsiness” in our work. FPA isn’t necessarily concerned with aesthetics and developments in music or any other form of art, we are more interested in creating defective records as a means for integrating the listener in the process of the music’s “creation” and bypassing the usual passive consumption of records.

SA: Is improvisation important for the composition of your song?

It is inherently linked to our compositional process and was recently integrated more on our latest record as a part of our vocabulary.

SA: And how much is rhythm important for you?

Roger Tellier: Rhythm is very important to us; we would choose it over harmony-melody any day. When we started playing together, we were very fascinated by simple patterns repeating and interweaving and the pulse of a metronomic beat. With time, a more rhythmical approach to playing our instruments took shape and we started to explore ways to integrate rhythm and repetition in more complex and subtle ways in our songs.

SA: If someone said to you that in ten years your album will become fundamental for the born of new-new wave?

Roger Tellier: I doubt that would ever happen...

SA: Your label (Constellation) thanks to bands like you, Sofa, Do Make Say Think, A Silver Mt Zion, is one of the must eclectic nowadays, are you satisfied by their work? And which are the bands in the roster that you prefer? I can suggest one: Exhaust.

Roger Tellier: Constellation are an amazing record label with whom we have the chance of interacting personally due to our geographical situation; we are both based in Montreal. This has helped solidify a relationship based on a true understanding of both partie’s intentions and motivations, we have both made huge efforts to try and understand where either are coming from.

SA: I don’t want to ask you the album you prefer but I would lake to known three covers that you dream to realize

Roger Tellier: Only one cover has been an obsession of mine: Ruckzuck by the first incarnation of Kraftwerk (no flutes in our version though!)

SA: I hate my chair... let's be tourist for a second, please. Would you like to open a little window about the place where you live? Habits, life styleÉ.

Roger Tellier: Montreal is a very complex city full of contradictions. It is multicultural and has two main languages, english and french. The multiplicity of cultures opens your eyes to difference and challenges you in your reality; it stimulates richness of being and acceptance of other lifestyles, ideas and beliefs. We have access to many different foods, music and other aspects of culture. The cost of living is relatively low for a north american city and this makes it easier for musicians and artists to work their trade and still eat. As a result of this Montreal has a pretty nice little self-sustained community of people trying to bypass the official lifestyles; independent venues and cafes, independent record labels, small printers, anarchist bookshops, etc. I don’t know if this really answers your question...

SA: Sure Roger, it’s enough indeed: this chair in the south of Italy is something a little bit different sometimes

Fly Pan Am
