MOAT: Margherita Ortolani and Annamaria Tammaro

Father is written in capital letter: Father. First of all, before killing him (poor thing...), we need him. I mean nowadays many aesthetic and cultural reference points are changing, and it's up to us, the thirty-year old generation who potentially makes the world go round, to understand them and realize which of them really describe us, without facilities or short and walked ways. Once we have understood it, we can take a decision: going against? Destroying or inheriting? That's a false question because each communicative action implicates both of them.

On Saturday 2 October, these two actresses have been interviewed in Piazza Duomo in Terrasini, after their performance at the Second “Raduno Nuove Tendenze” (Second Meeting “New Tendencies”), the artistic and musical demonstration organized by the association “Musica e Cultura” (Music and Culture) which explicitly refers to the extraordinary anti-mafia initiatives that characterized, at the end of the seventies, the “Circolo Musica e Cultura” (“Society Music and Culture”) and the “Group OM”. Afterwards “Radio Aut” was originated by their fusion. Some artists and musical groups who chose not to adhere to the models proposed by the musical industry and who shared their sicilianity and the commitment in promoting the culture of legality through their art, performed in Terrasini. The first edition of the meeting took place in 1976 on Magaggiari beach. Peppino Impastato and his fellows had well understood the music aggregative power and its social and cultural function of disagreement and protest against the political system and the mafia.
“Su'ddocu!...omaggio al soffitto n°1.1” (“Su'ddocu! tribute to the ceiling n°1.1”) is the title of the performance played at the square in this occasion by Margherita Ortolani and Annamaria Tammaro. It received several acknowledgements: on September 2009 it won the Bando React-Santarcangelo (2009-2011) under Ermanna Montanari's supervision (Theatre of Albe); on December 2009 it obtained the first playhouse financed by Trentino Alto Adige, nearby the Piccolo Theatre Aur-Ora of Auer (Bz), in collaboration with the young service of the Provincial Administration of Bolzano; on June 2010 it was selected to join in Effects of movement III – Contemporary bodies for the turnabout to Rome.

SA: Hello you both by Succo Acido! Thank you for the emotions you gave us...Let's start right now with the first question: how come this mid-century hairstyle?
MO: I let Anna answer this question, it's her who takes care of the formal aspect concerning scenography and costumes.
AT: ...Do you find it mid-century?...it's just a form, I like what you say...because it's evidently crystallized in an age, my grandmother's age; all the suggestions derived from the text proposed by Margherita, were beige and powder colored, and I scented Eau de Cologne, everything lived in a domestic and familiar interior. Within the creation process that we call “living sculpture”, I felt the need to move through a precise way: form+identity+memory+history+society+power+poetry...from this, the choice of material in symbolical antithesis...a metallic body armor with a grandmother's pantyhose inside...

SA: Su'ddocu, the performance we have just watched, had a particular walk of life: at first it  lived in a very small room (as guest of another young acting company) in the quarter “Capo” in Palermo and, from October to June 2010, in the little theatre of Guzzetta House, an ex-kindergarten, put in Piazza Guzzetta, in Palermo, belonging to the Sicilian Regional Authority, deserted about 20 years ago and occupied by 12 homeless families, cleared on June 2010. Now we are here...
MOAT: Each performance is itinerant, it's a law of the theatre: in order to live, a performance has to exist on stage, resist and arrive everywhere. Su'ddocu, as Project of Applied Creativity, is not itinerant by choice, but by contingency, and it's based on the choice to elect Palermo as base of its activity (for many reasons). Migrations and changes of bases are the consequences of the difficult situation of the present culture and of our choices. For example, we don't pay, and we have no intention of paying the space where we rehearse. First of all, we couldn't afford it, infact we reharse about ten hours a day when we prepare a performance. Secondly, we believe our professionalism make us have a right to something. I'm absolutely sure that culture can be payed but can't be sold. So, through creativity, we are looking for some solutions to the troubles that this choice impose to us.

SA: Why did you choose, in this occasion, to perform “Su'ddocu!” at the square rather than on stage?
MOAT: In this specific situation, the “Raduno delle Nuove Tendenze” of Terrasini, we chose the lesser of two evils (two open spaces, without the opportunity to rehearse). Actually, “Su'ddocu n°1.1” has a so thin vocalism that it can exist just in a closed space. When we decide to go in an open space we have to accept a risk, but only if it is really worth it. In the case of the Meeting in memory of Peppino Impastato, for us the most important thing was to assist, beyond sacrifices or risks. However “Su'ddocu!” is based on a concept of deconstruction at all levels, and this can be also applied, as for the direction, to the fruition and perception of the audience. The stage is not excluded, but it's necessary to have a particular kind of contact with the audience; anyway “Su'ddocu!” in Sicilian means “They are there!”. It means that every time you go in a new space, you need to guarantee the best conditions to protect the beauty that we try to recreate (and which we obviously believe into). This is the artist's responsibility. The organization's responsibility is to offer  suitable services. I don't believe compromise is a word to use in these cases. I don't believe in the compensation of the lacks.

SA: Where is the text taken from?
MOAT: The text is original, dramaturgy and conception are of Margherita Ortolani. But, as the title suggests, “Su'ddocu!” is a “tribute” (to the ceiling). The tribute has a musicality, part ancestral and ancient, part pop and contemporary, that I have always had inside of me. In the writing, this effort of translation turned into the research of a rhythm based on odd times and always offbeat. There is nothing improvised in “Su'ddocu!”, the breathings neither; the writing pre-exists to the direction and we look for a precision, a freedom and a playing lightness, very near to the ones of a musician who renews and makes always alive his notes. Anyway, rhythm is the disposition of sounds in the time, and it's what I've just tried to translate: a rhythm, a time, in few word, a state. The references other people find in “Su'ddocu!” are all, more or less, correct: Kantor, Beckett, being of the opinion that nobody appears from nowhere. In particular the reference to Beckett is very dangerous, and we used very much  the residence of creation realized with Ermanna Montanari to the Theatre Rasi (seat of the Theatre of Albe) in order to simplify the work if too mannered. We are different. In the text there is a quotation from a verse by Th. S. Eliot, and a real tribute to a Sicilian poet I really love: Ignazio Buttitta.

SA: What is the relationship between the author and the Sicilian language? Is it a mother language for you or do you collect “unrecorded” material?
MO: I'm Sicilian. Italian is my mother language, Sicilian belongs to me because I grew with it. I didn't look for unrecorded anthropological or ethnomusic material to write the performance: it could take freshness away, and the purpose was not that. The text comes from something settled and stratified inside of me, from the will to express a “state”, the waiting and the absence. Anyway, I consider the language of “Su'ddocu!” an invented language that uses the rhythmic and evocative strength of Sicilian words. The performance, I repeat, is a tribute to the “Sicilianity”, not only the use of the dialect, but the unique and peculiar nature of Sicilian, its ability (positive or negative, tragic or ironic) to stop the time. The time we tell it's a suspended time, compared to a world observed by children hidden under the table: they collected crumbs of sound, craps of conversation, emotions that get out of hand.

SA: Which audience's reactions did you perceive during the performance today?
AT: In the time of action of the process “Su'ddocu!”, everything I notice creates a thick weaving where I move on; reactions are always different: listening, fear, amusement, sharing, no sharing.
MO: The performance gets into shape now, it wandered a lot; even if in pure Sicilian, it was understood also in Bolzano...so we are at peace with our work: we always practice it because we know we can discover many things within this work and because it is a real joy for us. When we rehearse and when we perform we enjoy ourselves. We really enjoy ourselves. I share Anna Maria's idea of generosity: it's necessary to give everything, it's necessary to be generous, even if trifles and spreading corruption often is likely to turn this into a sort of “broadcasting”... But we don't give a monkey's about it! You did your duty. To get back to your question, even if in Terrasini there were difficult and wearing conditions, we had got silence, attention, emotion, feedback, children's laughs and the church's bells too...What more could you ask for? I really felt the honour, the joy and the duty to place my work at Peppino's memory disposal.

SA: The audience clapped many times: did they think performance finish?
MOAT: I don't think audience clapped because it thinked performance finished. Because of a conditioned reflex instead. It's mathematical: if you push the rhythm in a certain direction, reached  the climax, the clapping starts. Think about the drum roll of a band. We really play with this and it's interesting to notice that deepening more and more the work of research, the internal rhythm shifts, and clapping shifts too, with a mathematical precision. In certain cases instead it's just the writing that plays with the frustration of the waiting, creates a perspective and destroys it with the action. Anyway “Su'ddocu!”, an the whole work in general, is iconoclastic and glitch: it is based on the aesthetics of the error.

SA: Why did you choose this model of woman, so female? You dress nice high-heeled shoes...
AT: Woman is female...otherwise she would be something else, a man, an elephant, a mug...
MO: We chose woman, woman is female. Repeating it would be crammed, like saying “human person”. Why? Is there the “cat person”, the “elephant person”, the “jackass person”?

SA: Have you ever played a male role?
AT: Yes, I got twice, in “Doctor Faustus”, directed by Carlos Riboty, I played Mephistophele, and in  “La Sagra del Signore della Nave” by Pirandello...I played a mafioso!
MO: Yes. Very often, I played very remarkable men: such as Lucifer, Iago. Playing Iago, for example, broadened my mind, and, once more, I enjoyed myself very much, a mutual understanding started. That's Shakespeare: he creates some giants, by a creation of brilliant relationship between little and genuine humanities. I don't believe there would be the same “love at first sight” with “Otello”, not only for obvious physical reasons. But to answer your question, I go too far, and now I say that for PhoebeZeitgeist, the group which I cooperate with, in Milan, I'm playing the role of a woman, created by a gay author, mainly played by dressed up actors. Her name is Loretta Strong. This has been a great challenge too, in the search of the greatest freedom and stage performance. Direction and stage performance payed great attention to the character's sexuality (in particular because the text is full of clear sexual allusions) up to a sort of stripping of flesh, a flight, an humanity carried to extremes, to the extent that sex doesn't matter anymore. In my opinion acting  has to do with love, with falling in love. There is everything: lust, lechery, charm, will to keep close, palpitations and little cruel actions to damage each other. When you leave a character for some time, and you play it again, you realize if there is still something or if everything finished...

SA: In the presentation of your work you talked about aesthetics and ethics: what does it mean?
AT: It means that we face up our responsibilities every moment. In the creation of a process, for us it's very important to establish where, how and why a performance has to exist.
MO: It means we need to face up our responsibilities and put forward a research process with coherence. This necessarily involves some choices and, from a certain viewpoint, makes them easier.

SA: Art and Truth...
MO: I don't agree with the preface, so I can't answer.
AT: Truth doesn't exist.

SA: What is a Project of applied creativity?
MO: It's our Project, “Su'ddocu – Project of Applied Creativity”. We called it this way because, beside the theatre, strictly speaking, it includes several activities and cooperations: music, image, radio, writing, art, activity throughout the territory, children activities. That's creativity. Applied because each thing has to have an influence and a visible comparison to everything around us. Existing and finding the space to exist, inventing the space to exist, creating the space to exist...from there, going through the walls and opening the doors...
AT: That's very simple, we often wonder what the appointed place of art is, and in which way it continues to evolve. As for me, I attended School of Fine Arts and, meantime, I developed as actress. These two ways seemed parallel to me. In my past plans, carried out in the contemporary art galleries, I have always put body in the centre of my research: sign+body+space+memory+, and I have always found difficulty in understanding the limits between theatre of research and performance. As for the place, artist can't restrict himself to a place of action (actor in theatre, artist in gallery, musician on stage, out, in...). Art always needs to communicate with several places and media: that's a process of applied creativity for us.

SA: Do you spend much time together out the rehearsal too?
MOAT: If you want to know how much time share two people who keep alive such a project, I can answer they share a lot. We spend very much time together, because this work takes much time. It is necessary to share time in order to feed on spurs, such as sharing time with other people, meeting, talking, confronting. As Conrad said: “How can I explain to my wife that when I look out of the window I work?”. Well, we have understood it. We have got our codes, we have got two specific educations, Margherita’s background is centered on word, Anna's one is centered on image so, a part from theatre, our common denominator, music represents a very important exchanging element. Moreover I think that today people underestimate the place good breeding has in the cooperations: if ground rules are not innate and common, it's very difficult to come to high levels of attention, comprehension and respect. That's what you put up.

SA: Is the setting a wake?
AT: Do you see that?...it's also that
MO: Yes, if you see that.

SA: Why in the introduction of the project do you talk about killing Father and making peace with him?
MOAT: Yes...father is written in capital letter: Father. In my opinion, nowadays, we  are missing the satisfaction of culture, the will to go back, to deepen, that makes everything difficult. That's not easy, in fact from the eighties, codes have changed very quickly without sanctioning their dignity. For example, I claim the importance cartoons had in setting up my imagination. So my brain is probably made up of episodes, “game over” and theme songs...But, whatever Sartre may say, it doesn't mean I'm not able to look at the sky...

SA: During the performance some children crossed the border line of the scene traced on the ground...
AT: We didn't write it down the class register!...I joke!...Well, it didn't change the performance in any way. Child is free from behaviour patterns...if children wanted to crossed the border line, it means they felt better there.
MO: Well! Your question makes me remind of something they told me. At the border between United States and Mexico there seems to be some free United States citizens who, on their own initiative and for patriotism, delight in shooting latin Americans who try to cross the border illegally...luckily theatre is different...

SA: Do you usually do a training before rehearsing? In which way do you carry out your rehearsal?
MOAT: Yes we do. But, in my opinion, it's useless to explain how, where, or when...it's useless because that's not the point. The word “training” is too hackneyed now, I think it's an alibi for too many people: staying eight hours (or three, four, five... “twice a week?”) in a room, practicing, or training, as you say, is not enough for acting. In my opinion that's a lazy way to salve own conscience, dreaming of false myths who set the creativity right. This work, as well as the possibility to call ourselves into question,  must be complete. I'm starting to understand that there are people who need rules to break them, and people who invert everything to reach a rule. In any case, if nothing cracks, if madness, fun, game don't appear, it's not interesting. All that is valid for any professional, that is hours of work, rehearsals, boredom, doubts, listening – very much – and attention. We are all too different to be satisfied or not to pay attention to these things, when we work together.

SA: How did the collaboration with Manfredi Clemente, author of performance music, originate?
AT: “We were four friends at the coffee bar...ha ha ha!”. This question suggested to me the song by Gino Paoli!...Well, how did meetings take place? I have known Manfredi for a long time, I was also in the music business so I followed him; his research process was running parallel with ours...so when you  walk the same way, sooner or later, you meet up!
MO: I don't remember the precise moment. Spontaneously...I mean without forcing anything: it is necessary to choose each others. That's what happens to people who belong to the Project Su'ddocu. We clearly start from the necessity to meet the work's need, and from the pursuit of new competences. What is happening to the Project Su'ddocu, results from a strange synergy that originates from our past experiences, from deep reasons who make us choose Palermo, from the fact that for us the Project has some strong and inalienable points that, as stated above, create some banks. That said, when you met somebody, even if a series of conditions exist (such as professionalism, respect, a common, uncommon, similar, different aptitude for work...I don't know...there are several combinations), however it might not work... According to what I said, music plays a leading role in our work. And Manfredi's contribution is fundamental. This is what we  seek in the collaborations. In my opinion, in this case, compromise can't exist so that collaboration works. A basic real esteem and an unlimited love dose are necessary, for what every person does in his field, to feed and nourish the process.

SA: What do you think about the survey of Italian theatre?
AT: It's wide-spreading and multicoloured. Personally, I pay my attention to boundary processes, namely, phenomena that collect several forms of expression (video, sculpture, performance, deconstructed and futile words), phenomena not yet considered theatrical, for example, I think about Antonio Rezza e Flavia Mastrella; apart from that, I just see a warm and perfumed duvet, that make everybody sleep...as for me, I follows those who “walk in the rain”.
MO: It's variegated, and I think we have come to a turning point, or rather I think something is going to happen...Except for some great referential icons that continue to exist completely as human and aesthetic examples (often both of the things), I find the survey of Italian theatre lacks a sort of lymph, the will to renew the language, a “novelty”, for a short time. In my opinion, in some sense, that's  organic: there are generations made for sedimentation, other for innovation, it depends on historical, social and economic elements. That's it! Now it's the last straw, many models, I mean theatrical models, have been undersold, deprived of their meaning...or they were not able adapt to the meaning, and now, I'm under the impression that there are too many people who do this job...a fluttering crowd using half measures and ambitions, actors of little account: drama workshops, animation and so on, all that is favoured by a Byzantine, dull and boring system. However the good thing is that there is something good, a thing that you can define nothing else but “nostalgia for the future”: a torment, a fancy of beauty that is looking for its models and creating them. Change will be radical.

SA: Do you have any proposal or idea to face the crisis Italian theatre is going through?
MO: To answer this question, you should define the word “crisis”, beyond the use and abuse of such words, in fact, today, we are all in the middle of a crisis, and we are all depressed as well...Do you mean economic “crisis”? Are you talking about cuts? Crisis of ideas? Spaces? Obviously, that's a provocation. Everybody knows today acting is very difficult. The first instinctive answer would be: my job is a proposal or an idea to face crisis! That's a little truth, and a big lie as well. Because, in that case, this work would be a dull and perverted war. On the other hand, we need to resist. I answer with G. Deleuze's words that, even if referred to another context, are applicable and illuminating: what we lack it's the “resistance to present”, we don't lack communication, we have too much of it, we lack the creation – Deleuze says - . As for the most practical aspects, I find it hard to interface who (or what) I don't recognize or who refuse to recognize me, that's a restriction of mine, and I will have to study in a strategic way to overcome it.

SA: Is the picture added to the introduction to the performance on the Meeting web site the logo of “Su'ddocu!”?
AT: Talking about logo would be inappropriate and simplistic. M.O.A.T. (our initials) is an applied creativity process, that is: the confrontation of many media; in case of “Su'ddocu n°1.1” several designs existed, originated by my conceptual specific outline that was developing with writing at the same time. It's like if sign and word burrowed a way, the way where we would meet soon afterwards; one of the ways to better cross our creativity and suggestions is “the game of electronarration”, finally reported in “Su'ddocu n°2, M.O.'s writings, wherein I rewrote a text and elaborated a story. Our research moves towards many modes of expression; in 2009, when M.O. asked me to collaborate with her, my suitcase of visual experiences naturally occurred, making me reflect upon forms that perfectly espoused the poetic line of dramaturgy. According to M.O.A.T.: word is form, form is poetry, poetry is resistance.

SA: Where would you like to carry “Su'ddocu!” next time?
AT: Obviously the only way to make an action live is carrying it around...and the way is long...
MO: When I planned “Su'ddocu!n°1.1”, I wished it could be agile, I wished it could arrive everywhere. Now, after the first year of life, “Su'ddocu!” seems to me a little David before many Goliath (the economic problems, the problem of gaining space and visibility, the problem of cuts, the fact that we don't like having certain things around, but we like very much other things and we don't want to part with them ). However we have come a long way, in the real and figurative sense, we practically ran through Italy and we'll go back the same way next season. Certainly we'll never forgotten we are in an island, and this, sometimes, make everything more complicated, but an island always has two perspectives: you can consider sea a limitation or a chance of travel. Personally, I'm not completely satisfied with breathing space our work had as yet in Palermo and in Sicily in general. We can do much more.

MOAT: Margherita Ortolani e Annamaria Tammaro

Veramente ci divertiamo come pazze.

AT: La verità non esiste.

AT: Tu ci vedi quello?....anche

AT: Eravamo quattro amici al bar…ah ah ah!

AT: Che  è vasto e  multigusto.

AT:  Non parlerei di logo, sarebbe inappropriato e semplicistico.
