Marta Cuscunà

Marta Cuscunà, actress native of Monfalcone, presented at the final of the award "Scenario per Ustica 2009", winning it, with her new project "E' bello vivere liberi!", about Ondina Peteani, a young dispatch rider of Italian Resistance transported in Auschwitz. During 2010 the actress led the show "E' bello vivere liberi!" around Italy.

Marta Cuscunà was born in Monfalcone (Gorizia).
In 2001 she participated in the workshop Fare Teatro designed and conducted by Luisa Vermiglio for the Municipality of Monfalcone. The most important training starts Before with Prima del Teatro: European School for the Art of the Actor, where she met some great masters of contemporary theater including Joan Baixas, which was the director of the Teatro de la Claca of Barcelona, José Sanchis
Sinisterra, founder of the Teatro Fronterizo and of the Sala Beckett in Barcelona and many others.
In 2004 she debuted as a professional actress in the performances Pesciomìni by Ugo Vicic and
Pippo Pettirosso by Tullio Altan, produced by CTA-Regional Centre for the Theatre of Animation and Figures of Gorizia. In 2006 she made her debut abroad as a professional actress in a leading Catalan production: Merma Neverdies, a shows with puppet designed by Joan Mirò directed by Joan Baixas, produced by Barcelona-Elsinore, exclusively for Tate Modern Gallery in London. With this show she took part in some important European places such as The Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, The World Heritage Ortigia Festival, the Teatro Español in Madrid, in Die Frankfurter Buchmesse Germany, the Fundació Miró in Palma de Mallorca, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao and others.
In 2007 she returned in Italy with the show Indemoniate!, by Giuliana Carlo Musso and Carlo Tolazzi, directed by Massimo Somaglino, produced by Udine Theatre Club and Teatro Stabile Rossetti of Friuli Venezia Giulia. In 2009 she was in European tour with the show Zoe, the latest production of the
Compañía Teatro de la Claca of Barcelona, headed by Joan Baixas.
In Italy, she presented at the final of the award Scenario, winning it, with her new project: for which Belinda De Vito built the props and Mark Rogante edited the audio. During 2010 she led the show E' bello vivere liberi! around Italy.

SA: Hi Marta ! Tell us about your training and how did your passion for the theatre born.
MC: My passion born in a very simple way: I was lucky enough to go always to the theatre with my parents. As a child I was taken to see puppet shows, then during high school they often gave me a subscription to the season of the Teatro Comunale of Monfalcone. Well, looking at others who did theatre, I had the curiosity to try it myself. So I enrolled in a free workshop organized by the Municipality of Monfalcone for young people in the city. The workshop was called its "Making Theatre" and was designed and conducted by LuisaVermiglio. In this workshop, I have a firsthand idea of theatre as a playful ritual of a community. But above all, that first workshop was a kind of art-imprinting that has taught me to use the stories of my territory as material for theatrical research. A nice discovery for a teenage girl who felt suffocated in a small town in the northeast suburbs! After high school experience is my conviction to choose the theatre as a profession and so I started going to the “Prima del Teatro”, an European School for the art of the actor in San Miniato, where I met some great masters of contemporary theatre.

SA: How important is technique in the creative process?

MC: A lot. I conceive the theatre in a very craftsmanship way. For me, the "actor" is like a cook or a baker who must learn to use the tools of the trade, get food, work out in classic recipes and then inventing new ones. Only with a good technique one may be able to achieve a good inspiration that is the result of something more abstract like the talent. Perhaps the word "technique" is a bit 'cold and could be replaced by "know", actually a set of knowledge derived from experience and practice

SA: You have a method, a theatre company or a favourite character?
MC: Yes, indeed more than one. In particular I try to deepen the dramaturgical protocols by José Sanchis Sinisterra. As for the puppet theatre and the work with puppets, my master is Joan Baixas, the director of my company, La Claca Barcelona. But the idea of civic theatre, conceived as a social gathering project, is developed in collaboration with Massimo and Giuliana Musso Somaglino

SA: What would be, in your opinion, the ethics of an actor?
MC: In my opinion, the ethics of an actor should travel on two parallel tracks: the respect for the theatre as an art, and also the respect for the public. Often, in everyday work, mechanisms that have nothing to do with the Arts get more and more strength: mechanisms related to the desperate search for money, to the profit with the help of friendships with the policy and its consequent blackmail, to the market forces that tend to approve more and more works of art to television standards. All this stuff dirt and cheapens the art, which instead should be considered by the (or artist in general) as something sacred, pure. Those who choose to make art should remind themselves that they have a responsibility to the artistic legacy of their predecessors. Me, I do theatre, I have to deal daily with the fact that in ancient Greece, theatre was essential for the life of the polis. The public, through the plays (both comedies and tragedies), reworked the present and built a review, which was a critical need for life and the choices of the community. So if I want to do theatre, also I must try to do a job useful for the present and for our society. This is the only way I could manage to achieve something great that could leave a mark. Everything else is "show": sequins and spangles... Respect for the Public is in my opinion, a consequence: an actor should be aware that people who are in theatre consciously choose to spend time, effort to leave the house, money for the ticket. Viewers are willing to turn off cell phones, to remain silent, look, listen, think, laugh, get excited, they are there only for the artist and his work... this is an honour that cannot go to waste! For this reason actor should always offer the public something equally precious, something exceptional. Instead, you Often can see shows that are botched, poor, cold, that do not require any particular effort to. I think this is unethical.

SA: Those working in theatre, in which artistic and ethical pitfalls, risks incurring more often?

MC: The traps are, for example, the laws of the market: the need to produce commercial shows that easily attract the "mass audience", the need to bend art to the production of wealth. Or try to always explain everything, to do didactic shows because the audience should not make any effort. Or the risk for the artist to consider himself "higher", more educated and smarter than the viewer, and thus justify a possible failure of his, without a comparison with the spectators. An ethical pitfall could be instead the attempt to give the public answers or explicit judgments and especially draw conclusions through the artistic work. The should instead (again according to me), leave the discussion open, give the public the tools to make itself a point of view and would not provide a pre-packaged one. You should always safeguard the public's right to be an active part in the play.

SA: you have replaced the word "technical" with the term "knowledge", in reference to the baggage needed for an "" to reach a good level in their profession. How important is, in order to enrich this "knowledge", go to the theatre?
MC: It is very important, otherwise the risk of forgetting what it means to be public. To return to the comparison with the cook: the that just do the shows without ever seeing one, would be like an anorexic chef... in the kitchen it would not work, right? In my opinion, even in the theatre.

SA: How important is for you the "citation" in the arts?
MC: if a citation is based on strong artistic foundations can be very useful and increase the value of the work. For example, if you cite the work of someone who you consider a master. It 's a way to draw on its artistic roots, like a child who feels herself as an adult to cite a phrase, a thought that was of his parents ... the citation can be a bond, a legacy. In the world of painting the citation is very common as an opportunity for research and experimentation. I think, just to give two examples, to the revision made by Dali of the Angelus of MiIllet, or Picasso, who proposed his own version of the painting Las Meninas of Velázquez

SA: How important is reading for an actor ?
MC: I think that reading is important because it includes time for reflection and deepening. Read means to choose for themselves when and how of "assimilation" and "imagination" of the contents.
For the actors, intended as a playwright, reading can be very important to remember that the theatre does not provide this time during the performance. The audience cannot see a scene again, or listen to a sentence again, skip an act or imagine itself an environment, a character action. Everything is seen, heard, treated with the time chosen by the actors. Sometimes I happened to attend performances that were written as novels, essays or literary works. This, to me, works hard on stage because the theatre needs of different rhythms and languages. Keep this fact in mind was fundamental in writing “È bello vivere liberi!”. In fact, my work comes from a book: the historical biography of Ondina. Moving from reading to the drama has involved a radical change. Or maybe an evolution in the play because I tried to convey not only the content that I learned from the book but also the thoughts, the ideas, the suggestions that were born during the "time" of the reading.

SA: Could you suggest us some books which have been of great importance for you?
MC: For the creation of the show they have been essential "È BELLO VIVERE LIBERI" the Biography of Ondina Peteani written by Anna Di Giannantonio, published by the Regional Institute for the History of the Liberation Movement of the Friuli Venezia Giulia; "SARÀ ANCORA BELLO - STORIE DI DONNE DELLA VENEZIA GIULIA TRA FASCISMO, RESISTENZA E DOPOGUERRA" by Silva Bon, Anna Giannantonio, Chiara Fragiacomo and Marina Rossi, published by the Gasparini Institute of Gradisca. Moreover, for my own personal experience it was essential to read "LETTERE AD UN GIOVANE POETA" by Reiner Maria Rilke.

SA: What do you think about the Italian theatre?
MC: My impression is that most of the Italian scene perfectly reflects our country, that is pretty old, commercial and that it tends to self-preservation.

SA: How did you meet Ondina Peteani, the star of the show "è bello vivere liberi," with whom you attended the prize “Scenario Ustica 2009”?
MC: I met her in a very casual way: I came across the book of his biography. But it was an overwhelming encounter.

SA: What difficulties and what advantages you experienced in treating the same time, the writing, direction and interpretation of the show?
MC: The main advantage was that most of the show took shape while I was writing, and drama were already included in the guidelines of the direction and interpretation. This has speeded up the construction because only very few scenes were left vague in my head. The main difficulty was that after a while 'I could not have an overview of the work. It was like having a puzzle in front of you, on which you worked for a year: at some point the eye sees only the cards and can no longer get away to see the whole picture.

SA: The narrative line of the show is divided into chapters. What reasons you attribute to this choice?
MC: After the reading of Ondina’s biography, I built a sort of scheme to clarify my ideas on which were the core themes that I wanted to develop dramatically. This scheme consisted of pictures with a title and a sketch: a photo of your keywords. Under this scheme I built the drama that has kept the picture structure (the chapters). I believe that this method has greatly enriched my work. Often the theatre monologues are constructed as if they were a single speech, like a river of words that move from A to B to C in a logic and sustained way. In my case this modality seemed to me risky, since it was the first time I ventured into drama. In unskilled hands a one hour monologue risks of becoming a flat and didactic show. The division into chapters has made me more free and allowed me to jump without worries from A to C, and to suddenly change atmospheres and languages avoiding to the public to remain confused or disoriented.

SA: How important is music in this show?
MC: A lot. As a director I have tried to give her an active role: in some occasions it is the music in my place that tells a reaction, a subtext. This choice derives from a reflection that gave me one of my great masters of theatre, Joan Baixas. In a seminar he pointed out to me that there are mainly three possible relationships between actor and music on the stage: the first in which the protagonist is the actor, music is only a mere background and after the first moments you do not listen to it anymore, the second in which the music is stronger than the actor and takes over at the expense of him and of the stage action, the third in which actor and music have an equal role and equal dramaturgical dignity.

SA: What are the roles of the puppets in the second part of the show with respect to the narrative?
MC: I chose to use the puppets to tell the murder story of the notorious traitor Blechi because, reading the testimonies of the partisans, I discovered that the same episode had been told by the partisans themselves during the war, right through the popular theatre. In fact, the testimonies speak of a dramatic sketch entitled "La fine di un traditore” written by the political commissar of the battalion to whose Ondina belonged. The idea of puppets born from the desire to recover the language and atmosphere of the popular theatre that the partisans used to tell their own feats. As for the idea of using puppets to tell the Auschwitz imprisonment, this came from the evidence left by Ondina. She says she experienced the deportation as ghosting. As if the torture and humiliation were inflicted on another Undine that she watched from outside. This split was a sort of method of survival, a way to get out of that horror. That's why in the show, the figure of Undine, who I interpret until that time, on arrival at the camp splits and becomes marionette too. A puppet on which you can do anything, even the most terrible things. But the choice to use the puppet theatre is due to the fact that in front of the real images of people deported to Auschwitz, the emotional shock is very strong and it makes you look away, while in front of a puppet beaten and humiliated, one can remain to look at and emotion gives way to reflection.

SA: You have planned from the beginning of work, participation in the Scenario Award 2009?

MC: No, participation in Scenario derived from the fact that I could not find any theatrical structure interested in producing the project. Some theatres have not even found time to meet and listen. There was no choice: I was just a good idea. And since nobody was willing to invest in it I had to do it, with little savings and all the time I had available. So I searched for free rooms for the tests, (indeed I knocked on many doors, up to that of the priest in my country who, hearing the word "partisan," told me that the Oratorio doors were closed for me…). With Scenario I could firstly show the potential of my project in concrete, in front of structures attentive and interested in the work of emerging artists. Secondly, after the surprisingly victory, I also had a bit of money with which to pay the designer and engineer.

SA: What are your plans for the coming months?
MC: travel around Italy to tell the story of Ondina. Nowadays It is a fortune, considering the huge money cuts for culture. It is perhaps the best part of my job because it is the moment of encounter with the public, with people that often, after the show, they want to share stories, emotions, thoughts.

SA: What do you wish to yourself?

MC: I hope to continue to feel theatre as a necessity and to be able to transmit it with joy.

Secondo me neanche in teatro.
