Valeria Marzoli

The children's literature is a very important and successful literary genre. Nowadays there are roughly two schools of thought: one that affirms the importance of such literature as a tool for growth and training both for parents and children; the other considering children's literature a hobby instead. We believe that Valeria Marzoli Clemente is surely to be included in the first current. Her "Scricchiolino" stands for proof.

SA: S for Scricchiolino ...
VM: Scricchiolino is my last work, and the first one aiming at young audience, published by Lulu in 2007.

SA: Tell us shortly about the plot ...

VM: “Scricchiolino” tells, in a high-spirited and yet also profound way, about a series of bully acts undermining the foundations of Andrea-Scricchiolino’s self-confidence. Andrea does not like anything about himself. Neither his name ending by "a", like all female things, or his damn ears that easily turn red as he can’t control his emotions. Overawed by a mother who doesn’t give him the chance to choose, to understand, and - why not - to make mistakes, and bothered by a gang of bullies who play humiliating jokes on him, he is actually in a dead end. His life is a hell under the clear blue sky until ...

SA: Is it a coming-of-age novel then?
VM: Yes, “Scricchiolino” is a Bildungsroman, an intense and light one, managing to touch the deepest chords of feeling, describing the difficulty of growth of one, or perhaps, too many boys.

SA: So there are conflicts on several aspects with his mother and friends ... You won’t make the same mistakes of Andrea's mum with your kids, will you?
VM: I hope not. But you should ask this question to Flavia and Tiziano. I swear I wouldn’t listen to the answer. But one thing I would like to emphasize is the final redemption of the mother’s carachter because yes, she’s too obsessive, too anxious a mum, but she also is a mother who loves her son - even too much - without realizing that, unfortunately, too much love can be harmful. Oh God! This is my portrait ....!!! I’m joking.

SA: Is the story totally invented, or is there some truth that has inspired the entire novel?

VM: Completely invented!

SA: No autobiographical cues?

VM: No, “Scricchiolino” is not an autobiographical story in the true meaning of the word, but Andrea resembles me a lot as I am a very shy person and often can not express my emotions if not in front of a white sheet. But, beyond that, the similarities end there with Andrea.

SA: Do your children give you any ideas for your stories?
VM: My role as a mom helps me a lot to get in tune with the world of childhood and adolescence, and it sometimes happens I invent a story with Flavia and Tiziano. Oh I forgot, my children are my first readers or, we could also say, my sacrificial victims. Choose yourself which role fits better.

SA: The book is also illustrated ...
VM: Yeah, in these pages my motherly heart is beating, as the drawings in the book were done by my daughter Flavia. Nice, eh? (Rhetorical question)

SA: What age do you think is suitable for reading and understanding the message of "Scricchiolino?

VM: I think the best age to fully understand the message of "Scricchiolino" is from nine years up, because the kids can read between the lines without dwelling only on the words. Moreover, many children have required their parents to read it and this, without false modesty, helped them to get a little more in touch with their children. This is a great satisfaction!

SA: So why should our readers buy "Scricchiolino”?

VM: Because it is a story that, with grace and a lot of irony is able to come into touch with the inner world of boys. “Scricchiolino” is not the same old stuff written more for adults’ use than for children’s, who are subject to "special attention" by the bullies of the day; it wants to be the symbol of the countless possibilities embodied within each of us instead. I promise that if after reading my book you will be disappointed, you’ll get a refund. (Sic! This is a big apple to eat ... I’ll go back on it.)

SA: You have published with Lulu.com. Why did you choose an American online publisher instead of an Italian one? Aren’t there any Italian publishers interested in children's literature?
VM: Unfortunately, when you're an emerging writer it’s not easy to get credit from those Italian publishers who prefer to "bet" on tested horses. Also, "Scricchiolino" is a book that faces the problem of bullying by an undertone that is different from the ordinary sermon, and what’s new does not always perform. It 'a classic! Then a few years ago I read an interesting article on Lulu.com where emphasis was placed on how they could reach many countries around the world – which I liked a lot. Some copies of "Scricchiolino" were also sold in America and England. Beautiful isn’t it?

SA: Are there any writers that you like the most?
VM: Absolutely Dostoyevsky and Chekhov but also Tabucchi, Erri De Luca, Paolo Giordano and many others.

SA: Valeria Marzola is also a poet ...
VM: My first book was "Vuoto a Perdere" (Lalli publishing)that obtained many unexpected acknowledgments by the literary critics of various competitions to which my publishing house had registered me behind my back. Every now and then I like to look again at the gold plaque I’ve been awarded with as a "promising young Italian poet". And even if at the moment I’m not writing a lot of poems, I hope not to have disappointed those expectations and to move to emotion those who read my poems still.

SA: What are your current literary projects?

VM: To make "Scricchiolino" be known nationwide and finish writing both a collection of short stories and a boys’ book.

SA: What does Valeria Marzoli expect from this 2010?
VM: A Neapolitan proverb says: “A salut annanz a tutt” (Health First). In addition to this for me and my family, finding a good publisher of noir for the publication of a work of mine that, according to a very competent literary advisor, is really intriguing.

SA: And, to end on a high note, do you remember what was the best compliment you received by someone who read "Scricchiolino"?
VM: I still have a note that a 5th grade boy wrote to me: "Scricchiolino is a book that will change your life." It’s a great commercial, isn’t it?

Valeria Marzoli

SA: S come Scricchiolino…

Belli, no? (Domanda retorica)

SA: Perché i nostri lettori dovrebbero comprare “Scricchiolino”?

Bello no?
