È bello vivere liberi / Marta Cuscunà

Prva nagrada Scenario per Ustica 2009: E' bello vivere liberi.

Kroz pozorište, čijim mogućnostima i izražajnim sredstvima Marta Kuskuna suvereno vlada, Ondinin život prelazi granice istorije i postaje primerom svake vrste otpora, starog i novog, poznatog il’ mogućeg.

Scenario per Ustica award 2009: E' bello vivere liberi. The resistance of Ondina Peteani by Marta Cuscunà.

“E` bello vivere liberi” (in English: “It’s beautiful to live free”) is the winner of the Scenario per Ustica 2009 award. The incisive title comes from the eponymous book about the life of Ondina Peteani, written by Anna Di Gianantonio. The play was written, directed and interpreted by Marta Cuscunà, a young actress from Monfalcone. She renders the story of a collective fight for liberation by the biography of a partisan from Venezia Giulia. By means of the theatre, whose possibilities and narrative instruments Marta Cuscunà masterly uses, Ondina’s life exceeds in history through becoming an example for evey kind of resistance – new and old, already known or possible at all. Ondina’s bicycle, which is both ingenously drawn and essentiel for the scenic staging, seems to follow a linear course, from lack of conscience to freedom (of conscience). Nevertheless, every situation involves a new encounter, a new obstacle that has to be overcome. Puppets tell about the inescapable dynamics of the fight: “the form of popular theatre written and interpreted by these partisans to celebrate their victories through these dramatic schemes.” Finally Ondina’s bicycle stops.
A train leads us with her and her companions to the gates of Auschwitz. A plumbeous scenery and two puppets (haggard, but with big eyes) conjure the horrors of the camp. They evoke our sympathy, but still keep the distance, that is necessary to get to the bottom of the story, to teach a lesson and to reflect the social problem, that remains. It is a play written red on black. Red is the partisan’s star, Ondina’s handkerchief, the blood of both winners and defeated; red is the flower that blossoms as the symbol of international communism bareyly visible on a musical box in the grey atmosphere of the set / the camp. The play is civil, clear and seductive, just how it is supposed to be. Marta Cuscunà tells us through the character of Ondina not about old ideals, but the “dream of an ancient hope”, of which the Italian songwriter Gaber sings, a hope that matures in memory, but regenerates in the here and now.

Preis Scenario per Ustica 2009: E' bello vivere liberi.
