The Kitchen / Compagnie Linga

THE KITCHEN is a plot of symbols, then, plot of tastes, colors, sounds of the kitchen, household appliances: the fridge, for example, that knows the faces of all those who orbit in the kitchen, if it could speak…it would tell about food going off, about the shelter it would offer the mother, about the blows, the abundant meals, that can ruin feelings or bring them up, sometimes in the kitchen, when it’s “calm”. The set design created by Serge Perret is an old-style white kitchen, with white and black tiles. Inside of it there are five dancers, three women and two men: they are like students in a common flat or sons of a large family; two lovers that want each other or parents quarreling…

The set design created by Serge Perret is an old-style white kitchen, with white and black tiles. Inside of it there are five dancers, three women and two men: they are like students in a common flat or sons of a large family; two lovers that want each other or parents quarreling…
This pièce performed at the Teatro Libero, in Palermo, from November 28th until December 1st 2007 is a brilliant contemporary interpretation of the symbol of the kitchen given by Katarzyna Gdaniec and Marco Cantalupo, two choreographers that have been working together since 1992 in Lausanne. The kitchen is described as the place of daily contradictions, of tensions and family and couple strives, apparently a neutral space. It’s the most common space in a house, in which everybody expresses himself easily, it’s a place to give vent to passions, either violent or hysterical, sensual or sexual. Rivalries, violence, neurosis thus. To the foreground there is the woman, traditionally “queen of the kitchen”: woman, mother, wife, she lunges to the floor and cleans it in an obsessive way; someone has spilled some water… He stands in the background, man, father, who beats her up and knocks her down on the floor. Finally, someone watching: the children, who suffer in silence, aside.
It’s a plot of symbols, then, plot of tastes, colors, sounds of the kitchen, household appliances: the fridge, for example, that knows the faces of all those who orbit in the kitchen, if it could speak…it would tell about food going off, about the shelter it would offer the mother, about the blows, the abundant meals, that can ruin feelings or bring them up, sometimes in the kitchen, when it’s “calm”. Children and food are listening in the shadow. Television suddenly interrupts the game of conflicts. Spaghetti become percussions and noises of the kitchen, music and sounds, that we know by heart, change and become something else, become game, racket, danger. The quarrel is quiet, again she suffers violence, the mother, the wife that is delighted on the table, that suffers or dies, and cleans, doors slam, dishes, confusion…he threatens her with a knife. Children’s anger against the father and vice versa. The woman, sometimes victim of this place, wants to hide, maybe in the fridge, she writhes: the woman is the one who cares about everything, she fears, she loves dancing in the kitchen; duty entraps her, she is so trapped that can’t get to regain her freedom. The mother cooks to show her love, she even loses her identity and becomes one with peeled tomatoes, salad, flour: she is flour. Every meal is an act of love, every dance is a gift: the duet between Nicolas Hubert and Kana Ote is a duet of love, very artistic, also the essence of the story: pain is appeased. He loves her, touches and kneads her and something is not clear anymore. Who’s cooking what? Who’s the chef? What is he cooking? …Everything gets normal: food on the table, chats and laughs…a toast. But something stupid makes them quarrel, a futile reason makes them angry and again they start with threats, screams, crisis…for the hundredth time! The kitchen is a social show that tells about love and hatred inside domestic walls, its rhythm is frenzied, its style is tragicomical. Dance is varied and intense and also the interaction with scene objects is very rich. The contact on the stage is true, interesting and full of energy. It’s a performance that surprises and hushes the traditionalist and analytic palermitan audience and invite them to think about a sensitive issue, maybe a taboo: the complicated dynamics inside the family. The kitchen is now an emblematic place that can contain traumas and fears, full of glances and attitudes that are much more eloquent than words.

The Kitchen / Compagnie Linga

I figli e i cibi ascoltano in ombra. Pen: Silvia Giuffre
