In September 2007, the Milan-based cultural association aMAZElab (www.amaze.it), in collaboration with the Arnolfini Art Centre in Bristol, set up an international project entitled PORT CITY SAFARI, with the support of the European Community, winning the 2007 Culture Grant.

PORT CITY SAFARI is a journey through some of the main dock cities in Europe and around the Mediterranean, which take part in the initiative with a range of research, exhibition and seminar projects organised by local museum institutions, galleries and universities.

Starting out from Bristol, which hosted the first Port City exhibition, followed by the site-specific projects held on the event of the Istanbul and Athens Biennials, PORT CITY SAFARI later moved on to the cities of Rotterdam, Tangier and Marseilles. The entire project will then be presented at the Liverpool Biennial in September 2008.

PORT CITY SAFARI represents an international network of cultural exchanges, of exhibitions as well as both a series of publications and platforms for the arts. The project also highlights a number of research projects and studies into trade, mobility and productivity in the various port cities.

In July, PORT CITY SAFARI will be in Palermo. The idea of including the Sicilian capital comes from the very etymology of the city’s name: Pan Ormus (all harbour) and from the great interdependence between the urban development and the political/economic life of its port.

In Palermo, aMAZElab will present the first “premier” of the video work by the artist Marcello Maloberti, created especially for the occasion, which will be shown in the display area of the EXPA/La Triennale di Milano Off.

IL MARE E LA SUPERSTIZIONE DEI MARINAI

Friday 4th July – 9pm – EXPA/La Triennale di Milano Off – Via Alloro 97 – Palermo

The artist brings together portraits and accounts of dockworkers, the men and women who work at the port talking about a range of themes: work, family, love, everyday life. There are some 20 interviews edited together into a single video, all filmed by the video-artist Daniela Manzolli, which are presented as stories, journeys, superstitions, tales. The backdrop to these fragments of daily life is a beach towel with marine, land or lunar elements. Because that’s what a port is: a place of exchanges, of connection between land and sea, between reality and the imagination. The work comes across as a kind of performance, a sentimental journey which guides the spectator through the words, the songs of the people interviewed and the sounds of the place.

Marcello Maloberti’s work will be visible in other evenings, during the opening of EXPA/La Triennale di Milano Off (for more details please consult www.expa.org).


The evening will start off with a series of readings dedicated to the sea and the port, including a tour guided by young artists, writers and architects of the port area. Curated by Alfonso Catasino in collaboration with Beatrice Agnello and Modusvivendi bookcase.

Il laboratorio culturale aMAZElab di Milano (www.amaze.it) da Settembre 2007 ha avviato, in collaborazione con l’Arnolfini Art Center di Bristol, il progetto internazionale PORT CITY SAFARI, sostenuto dalla Comunità Europea e vincitore del Grant Cultura 2007.

PORT CITY SAFARI è un viaggio attraverso alcune delle principali città portuali europee e dell’area del Mediterraneo, che partecipano al progetto con iniziative di ricerca, espositive e seminariali organizzate da istituzioni museali e universitarie locali.

Partito da Bristol, con la prima tappa della mostra Port City, e dopo i progetti site-specific realizzati in occasione delle Biennali di Istanbul e di Atene, PORT CITY SAFARI indagherà le città di Rotterdam, Tangeri, Marsiglia. Il progetto sarà presentato nella sua globalità alla “Biennale di Liverpool” 2008.

PORT CITY SAFARI rappresenta un network internazionale di scambi culturali, una mostra e una serie di pubblicazioni e piattaforme artistiche. Il progetto mette in luce diverse ricerche e traiettorie sul commercio, mobilità e produttività nelle città portuali indicate.

A Luglio PORT CITY SAFARI arriva anche a Palermo.
L’idea nasce proprio dall’etimologia della città stessa Pan Ormus (tutto porto) e dalla sua interdipendenza tra lo sviluppo cittadino e il fervore economico e politico del suo porto.

aMAZElab presenta a Palermo in anteprima l’opera video dell’artista Marcello Maloberti, prodotta appositamente per l’occasione, che sarà proietta presso gli spazi di EXPA/La Triennale di Milano Off.

Venerdì 4 Luglio –ore 21.00 – EXPA/La Triennale di Milano Off – Via Alloro 97 – Palermo

L’artista ha raccolto i ritratti e le testimonianze dei lavoratori portuali, operaie e operai incontrati al porto su vari temi: lavoro, famiglia, amore, vita quotidiana. Circa una ventina di interviste montate su un video, girato dalla video-artista Daniela Manzolli, che hanno generato storie, viaggi, superstizioni, racconti. Da sfondo scenografico a questi ritagli di vita un telo da mare con raffigurazioni marine, terrestri o lunari. Perché il porto è anche questo: luogo di scambi, di connessione tra terra e mare, tra realtà e immaginazione. L’opera risulta una sorta di viaggio sentimentale e performativo che guiderà lo spettatore attraverso le parole, le canzoni degli intervistati e i rumori del luogo.

La serata PortCitySafari è preceduta da una serie di letture dedicate al mare e al porto: un tour guidato da giovani artisti, scrittori e architetti alla zona portuale e animato da letture su barconi del porto.
