On 10 October 2015, at 7pm , Centro Arti Visive Pescheria in Pesaro presents the first solo show in an Italian public institution by the artist Alice Schivardi (Erba, 1976), entitled Ero figlia unica (I was an only child), for the Giornata del Contemporaneo organized by Amaci.

Curated by Ludovico Pratesi and Paola Ugolini, the exhibition focuses on the delicate matter of family relationships, a recurring theme in this artist’s research for many years. Schivardi’s project suggests reflections on the nature of the family in today’s society, through a comparison of family nuclei of different ethnic, social and religious backgrounds. The artist has activated a creative and relational process with each of these nuclei, to find a way of penetrating not only the family but also its worldview and its way of life. This inclusion in an “other world, elsewhere” is captured in photographs. Alice, dressed and groomed in keeping with the cultural and social codes of the host family, transforms herself into an emerging social subjectivity, balanced between the “other,” the family, and her own “ego”.

Every family is a world apart, made of traditions, verbal expressions, dialects and beliefs, in which the artist manages to enter each time, probing its relational fabric in an empathetic way.

The show, occupying the entire exhibition space of the Pescheria, has been conceived as a sort of path inside the project conceived by the artist for the occasion. On the main wall of the Loggiato, a series of embroidered drawings constructs a map of the emotions experienced by the artist during her encounters with the various families. This part forms a rarified, sensitive introduction to the heart of the show, set up in the former Suffragio church. Here Alice Schivardi presents a contemporary picture gallery composed of about twenty framed photographic portraits, in different sizes and formats, as if to underscore the cultural diversity of the photographed families.

The starting point of Alice Schivardi’s research has always been reality and human material, namely her personal history, her encounters and relationships, narrated and interpreted through different media like photography, embroidered drawing, installations, video and audio.
The artistic practice of Alice Schivardi is an evolution of the Relational Art theorized by Nicolas Bourriaud, since it not only examines the history and stories of the people she meets, but also attempts to construct new interpersonal relations, or to offer a platform in which these apparently distant human interactions can take place.

A catalogue accompanies the exhibition, published by Silvana Editoriale, with an unpublished text by Roberto Saviano, essays by the curators and a conversation with the artist conducted by Francesco Scasciamacchia. The book, to be released in November, has been produced thanks to the generous patronage of Corrado and Giovanna Passera.

With the support of Galleria Bibo’s Place.
