16 Uluslararası İstanbul Tiyatro Festivali
İlki 1989 yılında gerçekleştirilen Uluslararası İstanbul Tiyatro Festivali, 2001 yılından itibaren etkinliklerine iki yılda bir devam etti.
İstanbul Tiyatro Festivali, uluslararası üne sahip tiyatro toplulukları ve dans gruplarının yanı sıra Türk tiyatrosunun en iyi örneklerini de seyirciyle buluşturuyor. Festival için özenle seçilen topluluk ve sanatçılar, çarpıcı ve kimi zaman radikal yaratılarıyla dünya tiyatro sahnelerine de hareket getirdi. Modern ya da postmodern, çağdaş tiyatronun özgün ve çığır açan örnekleri, Uluslararası İstanbul Tiyatro Festivali'nin merceğinden sahnelere yansıdı.
Çağdaş tiyatronun olağandışı çeşitliliği Tiyatro Festivali aracılığıyla Türkiye'deki genç izleyicileri etkisine aldı. Seminerler, konferanslar, atölye çalışmaları ve sergiler, izleyici ve sanatçı arasında farklı bir diyalog oluşmasını da sağladı.
Uluslararası İstanbul Tiyatro Festivali'nin hem yerli topluluklar hem de uluslararası festivallerle son yıllarda gerçekleştirdiği ortak yapımlar, deneysel çalışmaların doğmasına katkıda bulundu. Festival bir adım daha atarak, İstanbul'a davet ettiği dünyaca ünlü yönetmenler ile yerli sanatçı ve topluluklarla belli bir tema üzerine eserler üretmeyi planlıyor. Bu birliktelik, farklı kültürler arasında daha güçlü bir bağ kurulmasını ve kültürlerarası tiyatro için yeni fırsatlar doğmasını sağlayacak.
2006 yılında düzenlenen 15. İstanbul Uluslararası Tiyatro Festivali, dünya çapında bir tiyatro buluşması olan 4. Tiyatro Olimpiyatları'na ev sahipliği yaptı. Farklı kültürleri buluşturmak, tartışma alanları açmak ve toplumlar arasındaki diyalogu güçlendirmek, geliştirmek için tiyatro, dans, müzik gibi sanatların işlevini vurgulamayı amaçlayan Tiyatro Olimpiyatları'nın dördüncüsü Uluslararası İstanbul Tiyatro Festivali kapsamında "Sınırların Ötesi" teması ile gerçekleşti.

16th International Istanbul Theatre Festival
Organised by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts and sponsored by AYGAZ and OPET the 16th International Istanbul Theatre Festival will take place May 15th to June 4th.
Featuring 8 theatre and dance companies from abroad and 25 brand new productions from Turkey, the 16th International Istanbul Theatre Festival will present over 70 performances. The programme of the 16th International Istanbul Theatre Festival was announced at a press meeting on, Tuesday, April 1st at DOT Theatre.
 
 
The Performance Sponsors of the Istanbul Theatre Festival are: Enka Vakfı, Goethe Institute Istanbul, The Government of the Republic of Lithuania, Henkel A.Ş. and Toyotasa. The Festival acknowledges the kind collaboration of Institut Français d'İstanbul and Casa d'Italia. The opening of the 16th International Istanbul Theatre Festival will take place Thursday, May 15 at the Hagia Eirene Museum. VISITING GROUPS AT ISTANBUL THEATRE FESTIVAL

Sponsored by AYGAZ and OPET, 16th International İstanbul Theatre Festival will host 8 world renowned theatre companies from Germany, Denmark, France, Croatia, Italy and Lithuania.

HUMAN WRITES
May,23 Friday 20.30 / May,24 Saturday 20.30, Antrepo No.3

World famous choreographer William Forshyte and the Forshyte Company will make a guest appearance at the 16th International Istanbul Theatre Festival with "HumanWrites." Dediceted to the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the project was created by William Forsythe and Professor Kendall Thomas from Columbia University Faculty of Law.

During the three hours performance at Antrepo No. 3, 60 dancers put their efforts in making out letters, words and sentences from the Declaration of Human Rights on tables covered with coal dust. They will endeavour to present a physical discourse concerning the reinstatement and preservation of human rights, in which the failure of such efforts is inscribed by means of a powerful body language. This compelling performance/installation also invites the audience to take part in choreography. The audience willl be free to exit and enter the theatre during the performance.

THE MALADY OF DEATH
May, 25, Sunday 20.30 / May, 26, Monday 20.30, Ses Theatre

The Festival will host renowned French actress Fanny Ardant with and adaptation of Marguerite Duras's short story "La Maladie de la Mort". Directed by Bérangère Bonvoisin, the play was sold out 30 times while staged in Paris. As with Duras' other works, the theme of the play is love, hopelessness and distress. This impressive one-woman play, starring one of cinemas most attractive actresses, who lately appeared in movies such as 8 Femmes and Paris, Je t'aime is one of the exrtraordinary performances not to be missed at this year's festival.

OPERATION ORFEO

"Operation: Orfeo" by Hotel Pro Forma is a musical work that draws on the basic principles of visual art. The play was directed by Kirsten Delholm, a pioneering director acclaimed for every new production. Operation: Orfeo is one of the most powerful examples of musical theatre. Enhancing the magic of music the colours of theatre and visual arts, this production is a contemporary interpretation of the opera genre. With its powerful music composed by Bo Holten, John Cage ve Christoph Willibald Gluck, rich light effects and outstanding, coreography, "Operation: Orfeo" is one of the performances not to be missed�

DEERS CURSE
May, 22, Thursday 20.30, Atatürk Cultural Centre, Grand Hall

Arca Azzurra Theatre (Florance), considered one of Italy's best private theatre companies, will present the third part of Murathan Mungan's "The Mesapotamian Trilogy"; "Deers Curse /La Maledizione del Cervo." Incorporating aspects of the shadow theatre, the project builds on Murathan Mungan's rich language backed with visual elements.

FAUST
May, 25, Sunday 19.00, Atatürk Cultural Centre, Grand Hall

The Lithuanian theatre company Meno Fortas and director Eimuntas Nekrosius will be the guest of the Festival with his latest production; Johann Wolfgang Goethe's "Faust." Nekrosius had been a guest of the 15th International Theatre Festival with his award-winning play Othello. Once again Nekrosius meets with the Festival audience, this time with Faust which received the highly esteemed UBU Prize in Italy in 2007.

DELETED MESSAGES
May, 30, Friday 18.30 / May 31, Saturday 18.30, garajİstanbul

Another guest performance of the Festival is BADco, Zagreb. "Deleted Messages" is the title of their interactive work. Known for their exceptional theatre shows, the group will participate in the Festival as a part of the Baltic-Adriatic Art Adventure Intercult-SEAS Project. An extension of physical theatre, Deleted Messages offers the audience a chance to become part of this interactive show by freely moving about in the performance space.

X APARTMENTS
May 17, 18, 19, 20,from 14.00 with ten minutes intervales, Meeting Point: Şiirci Café

Hebbel am Ufer Berlin will be presenting X-Apartments (X-Wohnungen) project based on the concept of immigration. A project turning private houses and public spaces into play sites, X Apartments will be realised in Tarlabaşı. Handed with written directions, the audience will take a tour in the neighborhood in small groups, discovering an installation or a short play. This will be quite an adventure both for the artists and the members and promises to be one of the festival's most exciting performance. Only a limited number of audience can take part in the play, reservation is required.

ON THE ABOLITION OF WORRIES
May 17, 20, 21, 23, 24, 20.30, Institut Français d'İstanbul

On the Abolition of Worries by Fred Vargas is a humorous dialogue between its writer and the audience. The writer claims to have solved all of his problems in human relations. In a style that is half scientific conference and half parody sketch, the play directed by Lulu Menase, touches upon issues like love, boredom, politics, economics, war and free will to solve the problems of the rest of 6,5 people.

TURKISH PRODUCTIONS AT ISTANBUL THEATRE FESTIVAL

Twenty five Turkish Theatre Companies and Dance Groups are participating in the Theatre Festival. Since the Theatre Festival works on project basis with the Turkish groups, their creations will premiere at the Festival.

Istanbul Theatre Festival will start a special campaign for national productions this year. All Turkish productions will have a single price of only 10 YTL. This campaign is realized with the support of İstanbul 2010 and aims at giving young spectators the opportunity to watch more plays.

"Leonce and Lena"

Tiyatro Oyunevi will present George Büchner's "Leonce and Lena"directed by Mahir Günşiray. The play focuses on young people doomed to abide by decisions against their wills in the shape of social roles. Leonce and Lena will be presented Friday, May 16 and Saturday, May 17, 20.30 at Aziz Nesin Stage.

"Phioctetes - A Civilization Trick!"

Adapted and directed by Bengi Heval Öz, Tiyatro Z will presented "Phioctetes � A Civilization Trick!" Friday, May 16, 20.30 and Saturday, May 17, 18.30 at Tiyatro Z.

"The Storyteller"

Continuing their quest for an alternative stage language, Theatre Dot will join the Festivel with "The Storyteller". Its point of departure is Alain Resnais's film "L'Année Dernière à Marienbad/Last Year at Marienbad" dated 1961. Writer and director Murat Daltaban developed the play through the imagery and text of the film. The Storyteller will be performed May 17, 18 and 19, 21.30 and May 26, 27 and 28, 21.00 at Bilsar.

"Irk Bitig"

Kocaeli Municipal Theatre Turkey will perform "Irk Bitig" directed by Emre Koyuncuoğlu, Going back to the early 9th century, Irk Bitig is the oldest inscription about the real and the spiritual world, the good and the bad and the perception of "fate". "Personified" between the past and present, the text is brought to stage through "voices". Irk Bitig will be performed Monday, May 19, 20.30, Tuesday, May 20, 18.30 and Wednesday, May 21, 20.30 at Aziz Nesin Stage.

"A Trial in Istanbul"

Franz Kafka's novel "The Trial" is adopted and directed by Kerem Kurdoğlu. It is a production of garajİstanbul. It is difficult to define the outcome as "Kafkaesque"; on the contrary, it is a colourful tale of "falling from heights" wrapped up in the shiny, glossy coat of the world of entertainment. With the coreography of Candan Baş and music by İmre Hadi, in this show music, choreography and spectacle claim center-stage... "The Trial" will be prformed on Sunday, May 18, 20.30, Monday, May 19, 18.30 and Tuesday, May 20, 20.30 at garajİstanbul.

"The Notary"

"The Notary", written by Yeşim Özsoy Gülan will be performed May 21, 22, 23, 28, 29, 30 and June 2, 3, 21.00 at Galata Perform. At Notary where the reality of today's Turkey becomes visible through a deformed mirror, silences and emptiness between the state and the citizen is portrayed.

"Fear of Darkness"

"Fear of Darkness" written by Şahika Tekand will also highlight the Festival. Performed by Stüdyo Oyuncuları, Fear of Darkness is a single monologue composed of seven intermingling monologues� The play will be on stage Friday, May 23 and Saturday, May 24, 18.30 at Aziz Nesin Stage.

Time's Running Out I � "Sinful is the Tongue"

Written and directed by Nihal Geyran Koldaş, Time's Running Out I � "Sinful is the Tongue" is staged by Bilsak Tiyatro Atölyesi & Maya Sahnesi at Istanbul Theatre Festival on Monday, May 19, 18.30 and Tuesday, May 20, 20.30 at Aziz Nesin Stage.

"Things to Befall"

Tiyatro Krek will meet the audience with Berkun Oya's latest production "Things to Befall"� The average lifetime is estimated as 75. Things to Befall tells the story of this lifetime through eight separate short plays. Things to Befall are assorted into 7 age groups: 10's, 20's, 30's (two plays), 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's. Berkun Oya's latest production will be presented Tuesday, May 27 and Wednesday, May 28, 20.30 at garajistanbul.

"Caligula"

Eskişehir Municipal Theatre is the guest of the Festival with Nobel prize winner (1957) Albert Camus's Caligula interpreted by Ahmet Mümtaz Taylan. Narrating Caligula's journey set out thousands years ago, the play will be perfomed at Atatürk Cultural Centre, Grand Hall on Wednesday, May 28, 20.30.

"The Imaginary Invalid"

Istanbul Theatre Festival will host Diyarbakır State Theatre for the firs time with Molière's "The Imaginary Invalid". First performed 334 years ago, The Imaginary Invalid directed by Işıl Kasapoğlu and can be seen on Wednesday, May 28, 18.30 and Thursday, May 29, 20.30 at Haldun Taner Stage .

"Jokond and Si-Ya-U"

The world renowned Turkish poet Nazım Hikmet's "Jokond and Si-Ya-U" will be interpreted by a well known artist, Zeliha Berksoy. In Nazım Hikmet's poem Jokond and Si-ya-u dated 1929, Leonardo Da Vinci's famous Jokond falls in love with Si-ya-u who has come to visit Louvre from Shanghai. When Si-ya-u is deported after being arrested during the May 1 events in Paris, Jokond escapes from Louvre to follow her love. Zeliha Berksoy brings this fantastic and political poem on stage as a one-woman play with her impressive interpretation. Jokond and Si-Ya-u will be staged on Thursday, May 29 and Friday, May 30, 20.30 at Ses Theatre.

"Chronicle of a Death Foretold"

Istanbul Municipal Theatre joins the Festival this time with "Chronicle of a Death Foretold" by Columbian writer and Nobel prize winner (1982) Gabriel García Márquez. Macit Koper adapted this powerful work to stage and he also directed the play, that narrates the story of a murder foretold. Chronicle of a Death Foretold can be seen Sunday, June 1, 18.30, Monday, June 2 and Tuesday, June 3, 20.30 at Haldun Taner Stage.

"Boy Gets Girl"

Akbank Sanat Yeni Kuşak Tiyatro will participate at Istanbul Theatre Festival with Boy Gets Girl directed by Mehmet Ergen. Written by Rebecca Gilman who is recognized as one of the brightest writers of contemporary American theatre, Boy Gets Girl premièred in 2000 at the Goodman Theatre, one of the leading theatres in USA. Boy gests Girl will be performed on Sunday June 1, 18.30 and Monday, June 2, 20.30 at Mehmet Ergen's new Theatre Talimhane Theatre. The production will feature renowned Turkish actor Engin Cezzar.

"Mother Courage and Her Children"

Semaver Kumpanya will take part in the Festival with Bertolt Brecht's "Mother Courage and Her Children" directed by Işıl Kasapoğlu. Staring Turkish actress Tilbe Saran, "Mother Courage and Her Children" will be performed Tuesday, June 3 and Wednesday, June 4, 20.30 at ENKA Auditorium.

DANCE PROJECTS AT ISTANBUL THEATRE FESTİVAL

"New"

Genco Gülan will meet his audience with his performance "New" at Pera Museum Sunday, May 18, Monday, May 26 and Monday, June 2, 20.30. With actors improvising on top of pedestals at the entrance of Pera Museum, the performance will host an interactive exhibition space encouraging the audience to move about.

Dependent Independences

The Subvoid Dance Theater, founded by Ayşegül Güryüksel, has been performing since 2006. Subvoid brings together performance art with a visual narrative language and effects. Ayşegül Güryüksel and Ece Gözmen will be starring on stage with their performance "Contact Without Attachment", at the Haldun Taner Stage on Wednesday, May 21, 20:30.

harS

A pioneer in modern dance in Turkey, Aydın Teker is guest of the Festival with her new choreography titled harS which focuses on the relationship between the human body and the harp. Teker's collaboration with former harpist and dancer Ayşe Orhon creates a performative installation on stage. harS can be seenThursday, May 22, Friday, May 23, 20.30 and Saturday, May 24, 15.30 at garajİstanbul.

Machin. Body

Dancer, choreographer and instructor Tuğçe Tuna, along with the RemDans Project Troupe in which physically handicapped and professional dancers work together in the project "Dancing With Different Bodies" will be guests to the Festival with their dance show "Makin. B.D.N.". The RemDans Project Troupe's performance, which interrogates the relationship between the human body and the machine, will take place on Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25, 20:30, at Santralistanbul.

Inside Out: Marika's Fairytale

Choreographer Talin Büyükkürçüyan's "Inside Out: Marika's Tale" will display a colorful diversity in dance on Sunday, May 25, 18.30, at Haldun Taner Stage.

Scaffold to Eternity

A special event in the field of dance will be presented by Kaya İlhan. She is the first modern dance artist in the Republic of Turkey. As a tribute to her, eight of her students, who are now well known professional dancers will present "Scaffold to Eternity" This project dedicated to Kaya Ilhan can be seen Tuesday, May 27, 20.30 at Kenter Theatre.

Atrophy 1 House of Name"

"Atrophy 1 House of Names" conveys the artist's ironic confrontation with her name and identities which have changed countless times throughout her life for different reasons. This performance of interactive video, music and dance is at Institut Français d'İstanbul, Wednesday, May 28, 20.30 and Thursday, May 2,18.30.

"Atrocity Bulevard"

Serap Erincin, will participate for the first time at Istanbul Theatre Festival with her inter-city performance "Atrocity Bulevard," portraying the relationship of people and individuals in the city. Atrocity Bulevard will be presented Saturday, May 31, 20.30 and Sunday, June 1, 15.30 at Institut Français d'İstanbul.

"Engin-Ar"

Çıplak Ayaklar Kumpanyası and French "C Dance C" company will present their latest project "Engin-Ar". Engin - Ar will meet theatre enthusiasts Thursday, May 19, 20.30 and Friday, May 30, 18.30 at Aziz Nesin Stage.

"Confrontation"

Founded by Geyvan Mc Millen, Istanbul Dance Company will present its new project "Confrontations," telling the story of one's existence in the density of accumulated words. Confrontations will be performed Monday, June 2, and Tuesday, June 3, 20.30 at garajİstanbul.

SPECIAL PERFORMANCE: SIVAS 93

Due to the fact that 2008 is the 60th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights "Sivas '93" that was staged by Dostlar Tiyatrosu in 2008 theatrical season, will take place as a "Special Performance" at Istanbul Theatre Festival. This documentary play written by Genco Erkal is based on the fire, set intentionally, at the Sivas Madımak Hotel in 1993, killing 37 people. It will be presented under the theme of "Human Rights" at Dostlar Tiyatrosu on Tuesday, May 20, 20.30 and Wednesday, May 21, 18.30 at Muammer Karaca Theatre.

"A MEETING OF AUTHORS" AT THE FESTİVAL

In 2006, Trent University-Asti Drama Festival and the Istanbul Drama Festival cooperated in organizing "a meeting of authors" where Murathan Mungan, Özen Yula, Yeşim Özsoy Gülan and Tuncer Cücenoğlu chose one play each to be translated into Italian and read by professional artists. "Deers Curse", a play by the Arca Azzura Theater, is a product of the project.

This year, along with the support of the Casa d'Italia and Enteteatrale (Rome) to the Istanbul Theatre Festival, the Istanbul University Faculty of Literature, Department of Critical Drama and Dramaturgy will also be participating. Readings of translated plays of authors such as Renata Ciaravino, Letizia Russo, Sonia Antinori and Vittorio Franceschi who will be coming to Istanbul especially for the occasion, and the discussions that follow, will surely pave the way to future meetings of similar vein.

"A Meeting of Authors" will take place during the 16th International Istanbul Theatre Festival on Thursday, May 22, 11.00 at Casa d' Italia.

SPECIAL EVENTS AND WORKSHOPS

One of the missions as well as the visions of the Theatre Festival is to arrange workshops and meetings to create an opportunity for the young Turkish artists and drama/dance students with the masters.

In this sense; William Forshyte will meet and talk to his audiences. Ali Berktay will lead a panel on "Relation between Society and Art in Turkey: Sabahattin Ali", Muriel Mayette from Comédie Française will have a special seminar at AKM Movie Theatre, Sunday, May 25, 11.00. The workshop of BADco. will concentrate on performance and video art; titled "Whatever Toolbox," the workshop will take place Saturday, May 31 and Sunday, June 1, 11.00-16.00 at santralistanbul. New York Üniversity Experimental Theatre teacher and dancer Patricia Hoffbauer will perform a workshop on "Development of Movement and Text: The Body as Cultural Landscapr." The Festival will also host tributes to Avni Dilligil at his Centennial and Nurullah Ataçon on his 110th Birthday.

FESTİVAL AT SABANCI UNIVERSİTY

16th International Istanbul Theatre Festival will present two plays at Sabancı University Performing Arts Centre at Sabancı University Tuzla Campus for students of Sabancı University.

Sabancı University students will watch Arca Azzura's "Deers Curse" Tuesday, May 20, 20.00. Murathan Mungan will talk to the students before the performance at 19.00. Sabancı University students will also have the opportunity to see BADco.'s "Deleted Messages" free of charge on Monday, June 2, 18.00 and 21.00. These university performances are generously sponsored by ToyotaSA.

TICKET SALES

The tickets of the 16th International Istanbul Theatre Festival will be available from 12 April Saturday from Biletix sales points, www.biletix.com and the Biletix call center (216) 556 98 00. Festival Tickets will be also available at Emek and Atlas Movie Theatre box offices until April 20.

Tickets of the 16th International Istanbul Theatre Festival will be on sale from the AKM ticket-office from 21 April Monday from 10.00 to 18.00.

Credit cards will be accepted, students and senior citizens (+65) will be required to produce IDs for discount tickets .

LOCAL PRODUCTIONS FOR JUST 10 YTL

Istanbul 2010 embraces the Theatre Festival. With the generous support of İstanbul 2010 local productions at İstanbul Theatre Festival will be only 10 YTL olacak.
